Perth Standlick powers into Round 3 of Quiksilver Saquarema Prime – Surfing News
Perth Standlick from Australia made his way into the third round (No-Loser Round of 24) at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola after emerging triumphant in the third heat of Round 2 (Round of 48) that went down at Itauna Beach in Saquarema,
Brazil, Wednesday, May 23.
Ireland’s Glenn Hall barely missed out on victory, having to settle for runner-up place instead, but still confirmed his place in the next round. America’s Damien Hobgood finished in third place while Guadeloupe’s Charles Martin rounded out the fourth place.
Both the surfers found themselves removed from the race for the event title as a result.
The fourth event on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME calendar had attracted the top surfing talent from around the globe, offering them an opportunity to not only register a prestigious win, but also take home a large slice of the
$US 250,000 prize purse and up to 850 ASP ranking points. There was plenty of motivation for the surfers to deliver their best performances in the four-to-six foot waves that were gracing the event site on Wednesday.
The third heat of Round 2 pitted Standlick against Hall, Hobgood and Martin in a four-man battle for the Round 3 spot.
Standlick did not waste too much time to put his rivals under pressure as the battle started. Locking his first business-wave in the opening minutes of the heat, the Australian surfer unloaded a series of exquisite tricks to post an 8.33 on the score-board.
Keeping his search for another big score active, Standlick eventually managed to add a near-perfect 9.60 to his account, thus moving to a heat-total of 17.93 points.
Watching his Australian rival getting off to a solid start, Hall found himself under pressure quite early in the heat. However, he rose to the occasion quite adeptly, scoring a 7.80 off his first business-wave to narrow the gap between him and Standlick
on the score-board. He went on to back it up with a spectacular 9.43-point ride in the final minutes of the heat to finish with a heat-total of 17.23 points, just 0.70 points behind the winning heat-total.
Hobgood, an ASP World Title contender, had to settle for third place due to his heat-total of 15.00 points, while Martin’s lacklustre performance for a two-wave total of 9.20 points put him in fourth place.
