Peru's first week results: 2011 FIVB Grand Prix - Volleyball
The Peruvian Women’s National Squad is currently staying in Nakhonpathom, Thailand, in order to play the first round matches of the 2011 FIVB Grand Prix. Peru has been placed in Group B along with Russia, host Thailand, and Cuba. On Friday, August 4, the
Peruvian ladies contested their spike and block abilities with the host Thailand. Match result was not favourable for the visitors as they lost in straight sets. Thailand overpowered team Peru by polling 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, and 25-16).
Peruvian team was headed by captain Elena Keldiberkova, who shared her thoughts after the match and stated, "We did not play well. Most of us are new, young players. We also spent less time training together. We have shown our strength and fight, but they
just did not work out well today." She disclosed the reason for losing to Thailand at the official press conference, which was arranged by Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB).
The Head coach of Peru, Luca Cristofani had the similar feeling for dropping the first match of prelims. He was of opinion that Peru could have done better with senior set of players. Since most of the Peruvian team is composed of young players, Peru had
to suffer the damage. He described that four players were added to the roster of Peru shortly before heading to Thailand. They didn’t get much time to prepare for the international competition of FIVB Grand Prix, while other team members only competed in the
World Cup.
Peruvian players have great potential but they need to learn a lot of things and gain more experience. The World Grand Prix is the perfect opportunity for them to hone their skills and enhance their knowledge of the game. Cristofani looked at the positive
side of picture and didn’t regret the defeat in opening match. He seemed determined that Team Peru will be able to showcase a better performance in the upcoming matches.
Peru is scheduled to take on Russia in the next match on Saturday, August 6. This is also going to be a tough encounter for the struggling team of Peru. Russians are regarded as one of the most powerful teams in the world. They have two world titles in their
custody and currently are enjoying great form. Russia proved themselves in the first match against Cuba yesterday. Luca Cristofani, the head coach of Peru will have the daunting task of proposing a fine game-plan for his team in order to win. Let’s see how
the competition turns out.
