Peru International: Tan Chun Seang topples Hock Lai Lee to surge into Men’s Singles quarter-final
Malaysia’s Tan Chun Seang showed his class as he surged into Men’s Singles quarter-final after beating Hock Lai Lee of USA in pre-quarter-final clash in XVII Peru International 2012 on Thursday, April 12, in Peru.
Chun Seang, the seventh seed in the championship, was one class above his opponent in all aspects of the game as he controlled his nerves at crucial stages and won the contest without losing any game.
The seventh seeded Malaysian consumed 35 minutes in the court and managed to stamp victory over Hock Lai in straight games.
On the other hand, the lower ranked Hock Lai played competitive badminton but not enough to escape defeat from the hands of Chun Seang.
In the first set, the Malaysian took a small time in getting accommodated with the court conditions and started to play in a relaxed manner in the opening half.
In the meanwhile, Hock Lai showed his aggressive skills in opening rallies and managed to remain equal to his Malaysian challenger until the one-minute interval in first set.
After the break, Chun Seang played fast badminton but failed to take a considerable advantage as his rival was also impressive in the court.
The score reached at the ending stage when Chun Seang showed his class as he controlled the pace of rallies and won the game by a close margin of 21-19.
In the second game, Hock Lai started it well as he played attacking badminton but failed to break the defence of his Malaysian opponent who was quite comfortable this time.
Chun Seang played his normal game without taking any pressure of being a seeded shuttler in the tournament. He established a reasonable lead over his rival until the mid-game interval.
After the one-minute break, Chun Seang maintained his upper hand over Hock Lai by keeping his speed at the maximum level. He was in commanding position in the concluding part of second game and won it with an impressive margin of 21-16.
The in-form Chun Seang emerged as winner against Hock Lai in straight sets by a remarkable 21-19 and 21-16 score on the board.
