Peru and Argentina dominate opponents on day one of U-18 Girls Pan Am Cup - Volleyball
The Under-18 Girls Pan American Volleyball Cup was kick started on Sunday, July 3. A total of eight teams entered the competition, which will continue to Friday, 8th July. The city of Tijuana in Mexico is hosting the event with the help of the
Baja California High Performance Centre. The free entry to the event has prompted Ismael Acosta, President of the Mexican Volleyball Federation, to encourage more fans to come to the venue.
The opening day of the tournament featured four matches. Fixtures of day-one were as followed:
Peru vs. El Salvador – Pool A Argentina vs. Costa Rica – Pool A Dominican Republic vs. Puerto Rico – Pool B Mexico vs. Chile – Pool B
Peru vs. El Salvador 3-0 (25-9, 25-9, 25-9)
Girls from Peru and El Salvador opened the tournament in Pool A. Milagros Rodriguez and Angela Leyya staged a wonderful play and El Salvador’s Maria Jose Galeano also put up good effort for her team. The opening set of the match was won by Peru as they sent
25-9 onto the board. El-Salvador on the other hand remained unlucky on the opening day and dropped the following two sets with the same score of 25-9 as Peru bagged the early victory in straight sets.
The captain of Peru clipped 15 points thanks to her convincing attack. Her teammate Angela Layya registered 14 points, while Izabot Brazo contributed 10 points. El Salvador’s Maria managed to score eight points in the match.
Manuel Artieda, the head coach of the Peruvian team, was satisfied with his squad’s performance. He stated that it was the first international match his girls had played and did amazingly well. On the other hand, lady head coach of El Salvador Sady Lopez
credited Peru for better display of attack and defense tactics. She said that Peruvian side showed experience and that’s what enabled them to clinch success. However, Lopez said that things that the lessons they have learned will help them in the upcoming
Central American Competition.
Peru is scheduled to take on Puerto Rico in the next match, while El Salvador will put up against Dominican Republic on Monday, July 4.
Argentina vs. Costa Rica 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, and 25-6)
The second match of the opening day of 2011 U-18 Girls Pan American Volleyball Cup saw a one-sided affair between Argentina and Costa Rica. Argentina totally demolished their opponents with a mesmerizing performance and proved to be the better team in all
three straight sets.
Priscial Bosio and Sol Piccolo of Argentina helped their team with 14 points apiece. Following in their footsteps, Micaela, Tassara Antonela Fortuna, and Maria Sol Calvette contributed 8 points each. The highest scorer on the Costa Rican side was Yuliana
Gonzalez Alfaro, who claimed 6 points. The captain of Costa Rica, Gabriela Arias finished with 4 points in total.
Argentinian Coach, Guillermo Caceres, stated, “If you want to learn to win, you have to do so by winning your matches, however when you play at this level it reminds you that you are on a formative stage, but playing in a place like this it is a special
motivation for the girls.
In the next match Argentina will come across the team from Chile, while Costa Rica is set to clash the hosts Mexico.
