Peru dropped another chance to catch the spotlight – Volleyball News
The Women’s National Junior Volleyball Team of Peru, which was one of the dominant teams of the world in the 1980's, blew away another chance to climb up the rankings as it crashed out of the FIVB Junior World Championships.
The Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) selected Peru to host the Under-20 women’s international volleyball tournament for the second time this year. In the past, tje Peruvian city of Lima hosted the Junior World Championship in 1989. This year,
two Peruvian cities Lima and Trujillo are the home of action since Friday, July 22.
The hosts started out the campaign in the preliminary round and appeared in three matches according to the competition formula. They contested their games skills with teams from Slovakia, Tunisia and Egypt during the prelims and worked-out excellent results.
The home team dominated Pool A and defeated other three group members in order to top the ranking. Peru performed so well that they finished the first round without losing a single set. They finished all their matches in straight three sets and compiled an
overall score of 3-0 at the end of first round.
The home crowd was greatly pleased to see their team in a strong position. Anyhow, as luck would have it, the real disaster for Peru started out in the second round. Peru found a place in Pool E along with strong teams of the world such as Italy, United
States and Dominican Republic. It was the real test of temperament for Peruvian ladies. They put up against Italian team in the first match of second round on Tuesday and received defeat.
Team Italy showed its attacking power on the centre court and pushed home squad behind. The frequent serve and reception errors caused a big damage to Peruvian team and led them to defeat. The Head Coach of Peru Natalia Malaga explained the reason of failure.
She stated: “It was obvious the difference between the level of Italy and the level of Peru. There was a problem with concentration. Not all the players were mentally in the court. We made a plan for this game, but we never could use it.”
In the next encounter with the Dominican Republic, the hosts once again failed to prove their worht. The Dominican Republic also beat the Peruvians in a three-set game and crushed the Peruvian dream to play in the final round. Clarivet Yllescas, the Captain
of Peru stated that the change of mentality of her team became the obvious reason of losing the match. She said the players were not focused.
Peru has one more match to go in the second round, where they will face U.S. Team. There is a strong possibility that American team will easily dismiss Peru. Even if Peru wins, it won’t enable the team to play in the semi-final.
