  1. Most Peruvians actually go through 2 marriages, the civil and the religious. the civil marriage is the legally binding one, conducted by an official from municipality you live in. The religious marriage, usually catholic, is conducted in a church by a priest and is considered by most Peruvians to be the truly binding marriage. It used to be that people got married in a religious ceremony an right after that conducted their civil marriage. Nowadays the church requires that people show their civil marriage certificate to conduct the religious one so most people get "legally" married days before they get "religiously" married. Curiously, legally married couples who haven't done their religious marriage will tend to continue to live with their parents until the religious ceremony is done (which gives you an indication of what marriage they consider truly binding).

  2. I got married there.

    Basically, here-s the info.

There are two ways to get married, only one is legal.

The civil ceremony is legal.  In order to get married in the church, you have to get married civilly.

Look here www.theultimateperulist.blogspot.com and go to Section 6 Legal Matters.  Good luck
