The cracking action of XI Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup concluded on Friday with the final round matches, while Peru settled down in fifth position.
Peruvian squad launched authority over Canada and finished the final match for fifth position with 3-0 (25-19, 30-28, 25-21) victory. The Mexican city Ciudad Juarez hosted the match at Gimnasio COBACH and around 800 spectators showed up.
Carla Rueda was credited for Peru’s victory against Canada. She added team-high 16 points, which included 12 spikes and 3 aces. Her teammates Clarivett Yllescas and Mirtha Uribe also did well in the match. They contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.
For Canada, Sarah Pavan put up a valiant effort and clipped match-high 19 points.
Canadians gave a good competition to Peru in the first half of the opening set. However, Peruvian ladies followed a better attack strategy, which helped the team to lead the scores. Canadian team dropped a couple of shots near the end of first set that created
a perfect opportunity for Peru to close first set at 25-19.
The second set was a heated competition as the scoring was tight until the set points. Canada used many different tactics to overcome the rival side, but lost the set with a narrow gap of two points, 28-30.
Third set also came successful for Peru and Edwin Jimenez’s team announced straight sets victory over Canada.
The match was followed by a press conference. The coaches and captain of both teams attended the session and shared their thoughts.
The winning head coach Edwin Jimenez opined about the match in the following manner: “Playing against Canada is not easy, we had to control Sarah Pavan and improved today. History would have been different with a complete team, but we are optimistic about
the progress of our players.”
Likewise, his Canadian counterpart Arnd Ludwig also had his say about the match. He commented: “Peru had a good execution and reception, for us we played a good tournament in the first part, but not in the last games. Now we will be focus on our next year
and next four years cycle as national team.”
Peru’s Captain Elena Kedibekova was happy about the final victory, but she regretted that her team wasted a chance to qualify for the 2013 FIVB World Grand Prix. In the end, she thanked the fans who come out for their support.
Canada’s captain Brittney Page was disappointed about loss. However, she said that they got to learn a lot of things in the tournament.
