Peru, it's a great country to visit the only thing is that their winter just started and is pretty different from here, is always over cast, humid,also they have this tiny rain that is called garua, one of the things about this rain is that once starts doesn't stop. Best time to go is Christmas when their summer kicks in , renting a home on the beach is not as expensive as it would be in the States. Also if you have never been or heard about the Empire of the Incas, you have to book a package trip and visit one of the seven wonders of the world call Macchu Picchu. Pictures of this site is always available in the Internet and seeing it live ,,,,,,,it's just takes your breath away, if not the altitude will. If you are into surfing they also have nice waves to ride.

If you have already chosen Peru for your next holidays, you would have made a right decision. As Peru has a lot of wonderful & amazing places to be visited such as Cusco (Machu Picchu & the city), Arequipa (Colca Canyon), Puno (Titicaca Lake), Iquitos (Amazon), Huaraz (adventure sports), Chiclayo (Lord of Sipan); and, of course, you could taste the delicious Peruvian food which is well-known all over the world. Finally, you will meet friendly & kind people who are ready to help you at anytime.

I was in Peru, two years ago and enjoyed myself so much that I told myself I would like to re-visit it some day in the future, if I could.

Lima is a crowded city and the traffic is chaotic. Unless you do not mind it, I would not go there. If I do return to Lima, it would be because of the Mercado del Indios (artesian market) in Miraflores, where one can buy a variety of stuff from all over Lima -good souvenirs to take home. Our USA$1 = 3 Soles. You can go a long way with our money.

Enroute to Miraflores, you might be passing the Pacific Coast, as our host drove us by this route. It is nice. There is a shopping Plaza right along the coast where we stopped to have lunch at a restaurant called "Vista Al Mar". It has a balcony overlooking the Pacific Ocean, great food and a great view! Try the seafood there and the "Tres Leche Keke"

(=3 milk cake) for dessert. Yum!

Cusco is the Springboard to many interesting places like the Valle de Sagrado (The Incas' sacred valley) where there are interesting Historical sites (I love History and the Mountains!) and also you could take a train ride to Machu Picchu, which is a "must-see". On the Valle de Sagrado route, if you take a tour from Cusco, they might take you to Ollantaytambo where we saw a traditional Inca home. Interesting. The route to Machu Picchu: one can see Llamas and alpaca herds and beautiful mountain scenery. Machu Picchu itself is a high mountain. The train takes you to where you can catch a bus ride to somewhere midway up the mountain and you climb the steps the rest of the way. When you reach the top, the view is breathtaking! It is worth the trip and the climb!

Also, within Cusco, you can take local tours to places like:

1)Sacsayhuaman: a ruined fort with walls built in a zigzag formation. The stones , used by the Incas, are hewn from a nearby hill. The Incas cut the blocks of stones so they fit exactly to each other like a puzzle. No mortar to  attach the stones to each other. Very interesting. And it had lasted for centuries! This was how the Incas built their buildings, we were told.

2) Santo Domingo Convent/Qorikancha: this is a convent (beautiful Spanish architecture) built over an Incas temple.

3) Tambomachay : a spring coming out of a wall built by the Incas

4) Qenko ancient Inca place of worship (superstition) but Historical

5) The great cathedral in Plaza de Armas . (Lima has a great cathedral that is interesting too, in the old Lima section and you can see Spanish architecture around the area, including the President's residence)

If you travel from Lima right up to Cusco, be sure to have taken Altitude Sickness prevention medication from the DAY YOU LEAVE THE USA. My travel companions did not do this and got sick for one and a half days. I took them and I was not sick. The Coca tea they give you, when you arrive from a lower altitude city, is supposed to help but it did not help my companions. Another person in the group took the medication the night before we left for Cusco and it did not take effect. She was sick too. You must take it earlier. Ask your Doctor and Pharmacist.

I heard that Arequipa is an interesting place but we did not go there. There is also the Lake Titicaca area. If you go there, you must visit the Islas de Uros, manmade islands made of tortora reeds, layers of them which grow abundantly on the Lake. Traditional homes and traditional boats are also made of these reeds. A "Must- see"  if you visit that region.

My wife and I spent two weeks in Cusco last October. It was great and I can't wait to go back. The US dollar goes much farther there than in Europe. There's a big difference in their culture if you enjoy cultural diversity. The architechture, local dress, history, mountains, weather, local food, shops, restaurants, museums, tours, friendliness toward Americans all make me want to return and explore more. We did the four day hike to Machu Picchu. Wow! Everyone I met spoke much better English than my Spanish is. They have Internet Cafe's everywhere that cost about $0.50 an hour USD. You'll love the restaurants. Ask around and try lots of them. Stay away from the crowded ones. The empty ones can be just as good. You'll be amazed.
