Peruvian women’s national volleyball team defeats Canada 3-1: XVI Pan American Games
The Peruvian women’s national volleyball team had a match with the Canadians on Wednesday, October 19, as part of the XVI Pan American Games Guadalajara 2011 that are currently being staged in Guadalajara, Mexico. The competition was part of the 5-8 classification
matches of the tournament and the match lasted four thrilling sets at the end of which the Peruvians were able to overcome the Canadian side by 3-1.
The first set of the match was the most tough as both teams were trying their best to get the upper hand in the game. As the set progressed, Peru as well as Canada stayed neck to neck with each other but the Canadians prevailed in bagging the opening set
of the game at 24-26. The Peruvian squad did not take defeat well and were able to assert themselves in the second set which Peru secured by a significant margin. The third set went fairly level and ended in the favour of the Canadians. The start of the fourth
set saw the Peruvians take the lead early on and the Canadians kept trailing behind all the way till Peru had bagged the set as well as the match at the following final set scores: 24-26, 25-18, 22-25 and 25-19.
The coach of the Peruvian team, Luca Cristofani, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference that was conducted after the match had reached its close: “This was not a great match for us, but we won when we put the extra at the right
time. From a tactical point of view, Canada played much better than us with its outside attack, but we were effective in the middle, and we achieved that advantage while having a good reception.”
On the other hand, the Canadian coach, Arnd Ludwig, shared his feelings by making the following statements: “When I see on the first three sets, we made some mistakes that gave Peru the momentum. I was pretty confident we were coming back, but Peru played
very smart and clever.”
The player that was able to register the most points in the entire match was Peru’s Mirtha Uribe who tallied a total of 15 points. Uribe was helped by her teammate Patricia Soto who contributed by putting up 14 points in all. On the Canadian side, the players
that were the most active were Sherline Holness and Elizabeth Cordonier each of whom contributed by adding 13 points each. Holness and Cordonier were both helped by their teammate Brittney Page who made her presence felt by adding 11 well timed points for
the Canadian squad.
Canada was able to outperform the Peruvians with a 13-10 advantage while the Peru scored more aces at 4-3.
