Peschke/ Srebotnik crash out to Vives/ Santonja in 2nd round – Rogers Cup 2011
Top seeds, Czech Republic’s Kveta Peschke and Slovenia’s Katarina Srebotnik, were surprised by Spaniards, Nuria Llagostera Vives and Arantxa Parra Santonja in brutal three sets at the Rogers Cup 2011, a WTA Premier event held on
the hard courts in Toronto or Montreal in Canada. They suffered a 6-3, 4-6, 12-14 loss at the hands of the Spanish tandem in their opening round match on Wednesday.
The number one duo consisting of Czech and Slovenian were one set ahead but lost their track afterwards at the Rexall Centre in Toronto. They were enjoying a fourteen match winning streak but snapped out from it after falling to
unseeded Spaniards in troublesome three sets in one hour and thirty-nine minutes.
Peschke and Srebotnik drew first blood in the fifth game and later broke their rivals’ serve again in the seventh game to inch towards winning their 15thstraight match. Despite losing their serve in the proceeding game,
the top form duo broke again to clinch the opener with a 6-3 score line. They clobbered an equal first serve share of 54 percent but registered a plausible 71 percent win on it. Furthermore, the seeded tandem dusted away four out of five breakpoints came across
and converted three out of nine breakpoint opportunities to their advantage.
Vives and Santonja re-gathered their concentration and after fending off three breakpoints faced, they held their entire serves convincingly. The Spaniards succeeded in converting one out of four breakpoint chances to their advantage
in the fifth game to eventually seal the equaliser with a 6-4 win. They produced an equal first serve share of 59 percent but earned a fabulous 76 percent win on it.
The match went to a super tie-breaker. The Czech Slovene pair manifested a higher first serve share of 69 percent as compared to their opponents’ 38 percent and registered an impressive 56 percent win on it. However, they trailed
in the end to bear a 12-14 defeat.
The blooming Spanish duo on the other hand advanced into the quarter-finals where they will face Taipei Kazakh tandem of Hsieh Su-Wei and Galina Voskoboeva.
Su-Wei and Voskoboeva overwhelmed threat by Americans, Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, in a three set thriller to reach this spot. They saved three out of five breakpoints conceded and capitalised on three out of twelve breakpoint
chances to their advantage to seal the match with a 6-4, 6-7(4), 10-5 score line in one hour and thirty-four minutes.
