Peschke/ Srebotnik outclass Mirza/ Vesnina in Women’s Doubles semi-final – Wimbledon 2011
Women’s doubles entered its final stages at the Wimbledon Championships, with the second seeded pair of Kveta Peschke of Czech Republic and Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia making it into the final of the tournament on Friday. They
defeated the fourth seeded duo of Sania Mirza from India and Elena Vesnina of Russia in the semi-final clash to get a title shot at the Grand Slam event.
The contest appeared pretty one-sided, with the second seeded pair dominating every bit of the game. The combination of Peschke and Srebotnik proved too good for Mirza and Vesnina, who submitted the contest in straight sets 3-6,
1-6, to end their dream run at the Wimbledon Championships this year.
Peschke and Srebotnik took merely 64 minutes to conclude an authoritative victory over the fourth seeded duo. They both were phenomenal with their serve games and delivered 64 per cent of the first serve on target, while securing
21 out of 25 points on it.
Mirza and Vesnina has been one of the finest pair in the Wimbledon field this year and they have played quality tennis en route to the semi-finals. They failed to put up a decent performance with their racquets in the Friday’s
contest and were totally blown away by the belligerent second seeded duo. Mirza and Vesnina conceded five unforced errors in the game, which proved very taxing in the end, and failed to craft a single break opportunity in the entire matchup.
Peschke and Srebotnik developed a great chemistry among themselves to take down their opponents, who clearly lacked the required coordination in the competition. The second seeded pair kept the games short and professional, avoiding
long rallies by cracking in frequent winners to wrap up victory in straight sets.
The second seeded had a steady start to the opener but gathered up pace as the game progressed. Peschke and Srebotnik drew first blood in the fifth game of the opening set but breaking Mirza’s serve to force into lead. They continued
with their momentum in the rest of the game as well, registering a second serve break to seal the opening set at 6-3.
Mirza and Vesnina slumped further in the following set and dropped their serve on two more occasions to be driven out of the competition. Peschke and Srebotnik took the second set in the most assertive manner at 6-1, to book a
place in the final of the mega event. They will either face the duo of Sabine Lisicki and Samantha Stosur or the lucky loser pair of Marina Erakovic and Tamarine Tanasugarn in for the Wimbledon Women’s Doubles title on Saturday.
