Peschke/ Srebotnik vs King/ Shvedova – Match Preview: TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships 2011
The four doubles teams that qualified for the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships are set to face each other on the fifth day of the tournament. The teams will clash against each other and the best two teams will then contest for the title in the final match.
Initiating the doubles semi final of the Tour Championships is Czech Kveta Peschke with Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik and American Vania King with Yaroslava Shvedova. The two crews will clash against each other on indoor hard courts of Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey on Saturday the 29th of October 2011.
American King/ Kazakh Shvedova have contested thrice against Peschke/ Srebotnik in their professional career. The first time they met was in 2010 at Wimbledon and King/ Shvedova ousted their adversaries in three sets. They then met twice this year and in their initial meeting the American/ Kazakh had defeated their opponents in straight sets.
However, the last time they met was much recently at the semi final of the Beijing Open held in China and Peschke/ Srebotnik got rid of their adversaries in three sets.
King/ Shvedova achieved unyielding results during their initial two play-offs together in June, 2010. The first time they joined forces in their initial tournament they were able to make it to the semi finals and in the second tournament they became runners-up by defeating Alla Kudryavtseva with Anastasia Rodionova.
Moreover, together they managed to bag their maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and became the fifth unseeded team in thirty years to accomplish such a feat. However, it seemed to some that their victory was a stroke of luck but after a month’s drought they put those rumours to an end at Flushing Meadows by knocking out four seeded teams on the way to another Grand Slam title.
In addition, the duo qualified for the season-end championships the same year and made their debut performance. However, they lost in the first match and were unable to progress any further.
This year the two have improved considerably and also made it to many finals and semi finals of different events. Their most notable performance together was at the US Open, when they became runners-up by ousting many top doubles teams but eventually lost to Liezel Huber with Lisa Raymond. In addition, a more recent achievement was at Moscow when they added another title to their haul.
On the other hand, prior to their pairing in 2010 Peschke/ Srebotnik had initially met in two events but since then, have established themselves as one of best doubles WTA team.
Moreover, they have had another superb season this year and have collected six titles so far, including their first Grand Slam at Wimbledon. With this victory each soared to co-number one on the doubles rankings, where they remained until September. In addition, they also managed to become the first team to qualify for the WTA Championships.
Nevertheless, Peschke/ Srebotnik have qualified for the WTA Championships together as a team once in 2010 and they were runners-up for that event as they were defeated by Gisela Dulko with Flavia Pennetta.
Given the odds both the teams are going to bring their best performances on to court. However, it is expected that Peschke/ Srebotnik will overcome King/ Shvedova in three sets.
