Pet Food? Please Look?

I realize that I have already posted for this I just wanted to reach a different audience.

I was having the same problems that MANY others are having with the new Canidae formula's. Very loose stool that didn't improve. I am bouncing between foods right now trying to find one that I really like.

I was not happy at all with the changes to their formula and I want to hear imput from others. I work at a pet store where we sell a lot of canidae and everyday we have more and people coming in with dogs that have loose stool or are throwing up off the new formulas. I am curious...What are your thoughts? Do you like it? Do you hate it?

He is a link to my previous post if you are interested in seeing what others have already posted and more of my thoughts ;) : http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080828123436AACTYHj

  1. I switched to California natural from the company who makes Innova, EVO, and Karma.l! It's such a good brand! And similarly priced. My dog is doing terrific on the lamb and rice formula. I used to Feed canidae lamb and rice. But I thought there were just too many grains, and I was skeptical about the tomato pomace because I have heard that tomatos are bad for dogs with arthritis. What was canidae thinking?

  2. Gassy...sorry

  3. i have this aunt who is a animal lover. she got sick of feeding her dog horse parts and started making their dog food. i dont know how but it worked out well. her dogs were much healthier

  4. my dogs are doing great. puppy doesn't have diarrhea or anything...but its not hard p**p (do you know what I mean?)

  5. The food may be to rich for your dog and causing loose stool.  It's a great product (as in premium dog food - natural ingredients, no bad fillers, or bad animal parts).

Try a different food such as Nutro Natural Choice.  Not the Ultra - due to the richness and Max is the lower grade (high in fat).  Check out their website so you can see all the other vitamins and minerals www.nutroproducts.com

You may also want to check out Van Patterson, Bil Jac, Natural Selection.  They are all premium foods that aren't so rich.

    Good Luck

  6. Mine got gassy from the new Canidae, but otherwise were fine.  And now I see no difference in the dogs.  I don't enjoy paying the same for less, though.

  7. I switched to Canidae ALS and the place where I got it from only had the new product (she sent it back) - so my dogs have only been on the new product and are doing well on it. Firm stools, shiny coats - my one dog not getting sick any more like he started to in the past month on the Nutro. I think Nutro may have been a factor in my dog's death (Bluetick Coonhound - usually live 10-13 yrs) from possible renal failure - vet said that's what it looked like as she had lost a lot of weight (she was 9 and in otherwise good health til recently. She started losing weight rapidly but was still eating with gusto so I thought I had time to make an appointment. I was going to make the appointment Monday and she passed Sunday night (three weeks ago now) - makes you wonder if since the company that owns Pedigree bought out Nutro, if some of the Nutro products were contaminated with salmonella like the Pedigree was recently (and they chose not to disclose it - also top people have quit due to recent developments at Nutro). I read complaints on the Nutro and a lot of the pets illnesses were like my dog - they lost weight rapidly - so I felt I had to switch.

So far - I will continue to feed Canidae unless something changes with my dogs, but mine are tolerating it well - guess they can tolerate the barley in it. I wonder if some of the dogs are allergic to the barley as some dogs do not tolerate barley - that would cause them diarrhea and vomiting (mine cannot tolerate corn or wheat).I was considering Evo - but it had 42% protein and when I asked the vet he said no. He recommended Canidae as well as a few vet techs there - it was only 24% protein. Have you considered maybe going to the grain-free Canidae ALS when it comes out? I would, but it is 34% protein and I have a 12 year old dog(Shepherd mix) that may not tolerate high protein - the other is 4 years old (another Bluetick Coonhound) and cost-wise I need a dog food both can tolerate.

I was going to post a link to consumer affairs about Nutro and I saw you had one and said "Don't get me started" - truer words were never spoken.

  8. I too am having this same problem. It is not agreeing with either of my dogs. I have temporarily switched them over to a mix of Wellness Core Fish and Wellness Puppy, mixed together. They are both doing great on it. I am currently looking into natures variety brand, and doing kind of a rotation diet with their kibble and the raw/ canned also.

To answer your question, my dogs hate the new formula. So do I because it took me a year to find a good, reasonable food and my older dog has been on canidae for over a year and a half and my pup has been on it since she was a baby. so, yeah, kind of irritated at the moment.

  9. I have my dog on a 4 bag rotation, orijen six fishes, innovo evo small bites, Go Natural Grain Free Canine, and Instinct Duck Meal and Chicken.  My dogs stool is a bit loose on orijen six fishes, but that just reminds me to feed him a bit less.  I've noticed with high quality food you do not have to food them much.
