  1. Wind chimes can be intrusive, especially when you need some sleep.I have c.d.`s of the dawn chorus, loud bagpipes etc which I found useful at my previous residence.  What about some heavy metal played full tilt

that might make one or two of `em think twice??? Or some Ted Heath & Stan Kenton...

  2. Oh good god!! Your rant has hit home!!!!!

I too live in the countryside; my house is one of four along a small track leading to a working farm.

When it's quiet. it's deathly quiet.

But on a regular basis, my DIY obsessed neighbours seem to link their tools to an amplifier in an attempt to be heard over their hoard of screeching, banshee kids, six barking obsessed dogs and their ghetto blaster!

I'm a very tolerant person really, but four years of being roused at 7am at weekends by the 'Munsters' next door, and their inability to shut the ***** up when I fancy at least ONE peaceful weekend in my countryside retreat, has given me fuel to rant every now and then.

I suggest using a catapult on those wind chimes!

  3. Wind chimes add to the serenity or a rural setting. The tinkling sound as the breeze blows beats sirens and cars honking.

  4. you've got a point

  5. lol you do have strange neighbors! i used to have a wind chime... but kept it in my bedroom! do you have one outside you house? ;p!

my pet hate is the loud neighbours ALWAYS partying at 2! why do people not sleep!?

  6. I love the sound of wind chimes.  Very soothing.  If I ever move out to the country, I will have one.  I think most people are trying to escape traffic and pollution.

  7. You wait until someone buys one made from bamboo (the next level in chimes) they sound like someone beating a corpse with an empty plastic bottle.

  8. Yeah, doesn't seem to make sense. We have wind chimes, but we never really hear them once we are inside, unless the wind is REALLY strong. But, if they go out in their gardens a lot, then you do have a point! They may like the noise they make though, it depends on the person. My mum said she "likes the noise" of the chimes. It isn't my cup of tea, but it may well be for them. We have lots of traffic round here, maybe that is a problem there and that is why they have wind chimes? Great question, though! :)

  9. probably to let them know when the cows, pigs and feckin sheep f**t????? so they can shut there feckin windows????????

    get it...wind chime,bad wind,f**t...oh i give up?????

  10. That is so funny. Are you serious? I like wind chimes but don't own one. It's preferable to loud noises from trucks and cars. I'd love to do something to the neighbor's kid's big truck because he is so obnoxious with it. He just leaves it running and is so loud when he's coming and going. I could be anywhere in the house and hear the entire racket. He must do it for attention.

It beats me. But maybe they want some noise? It's never that quiet in the country. We have frogs and crickets chirping as well as chickens/roosters crowing.

  11. yes you are correct in hating it

I live way out in the country and I am the most guilty of that

I just learned to ignore them

  12. It is just another layer of noise polution and is not unique to quiet country retreats.  It is arrogant and selfish to think others might want to hear the noise we are causing.  It's not as if they are actually sitting outside listening to the wind-chimes ... yet they seem to think WE want to whenever we go outside or open a window.  I'm with you on this one.

  13. As a person who is a proud owner of several windchimes and who has been a big time wind chime enthusiast for more than 30 years, in my opinion, no, you're not at all justified. I think perhaps you are misinformed on the benefits of wind chimes and they way they enhance the quality of life for many people.

Ok, time for a quick Wind Chime 101 lesson....

Windchimes, believe it or not, are not only beautiful pieces of musical instrumentation as well as a work of art or garden decor, they also actually served a practical purpose in meteorology.

Our ancestors were so intelligent as to use a simple chime producing instrument as a weather predicting tool! Windchimes were particularly useful for fishermen and people living along coastal region as it warned them to not go to the sea and maybe saved their lives. How? Stronger winds and hence more chimes, indicated that a storm was brewing. Hence the reason to this day why you see wind chimes a lot in coastal regions, despite all this high technology we have available.

However, if you were a person who lives off the land, say a gardener or a farmer, observing changes in wind directions was important, too. For instance, if a chime is positioned on the north side of the house only a north wind will move it. It may alert the inhabitants to a weather change...and then you can act accordingly to save crops or plants or animals.

Did you know that for many people around the world, wind chimes are used as a spiritual expression?

For example, wind chimes are thought to be good luck in parts of Asia and are used as part of Feng Shui. The use of wind chimes in China goes back to 1000 BCE. In Japan they produce pleasant ringing sounds and are hung by the windows during hot humid summers in order to bring cooling relief. Even within some forms of Christianity and New Age beliefs, wind chimes are used to aid meditation and prayer.

For artists, musicians and writers, windchimes can also bring forth inspiration and aid in the creative process. This is the primary reason why I personally keep windchimes around both inside and outside of my dwelling.

There are also legitimate mental health reasons for wind chimes: The tones have a healing effect on our bodies, calm our minds and awaken our spirits. The resonance and vibration of sound releases stress and emotional blockages in the body and calms the mind. The calming of mind expands conscious awareness and connection with spirit. Wind chimes thereby help enhance the mind/body/spirit connection bringing us a sense of peace and well being.

Also, windchimes are a nice visual decorative touch, and when a place is pretty and decorative, it can increase property values.

But there's benefits in having windchimes even for renters...

I live in an apartment complex in a college town, and I've decorated the exterior of my apartment with a variety of plants and flowers along with few windsocks and several small windchimes (at least 5). They're mostly of a coastal/nautical theme, but a few are spiritual themed. No one ever complains about them! In fact, people compliment me all the time on my windchimes and tell me how they are beautiful, melodious and bring a sense of peace to the listener, and often help lift them out of a bad or stressed out mood. Even my landlords like it...I think they think they'll get a better class of renter when they see my mini-retreat lol.

My only worry re: my windchimes is that they might get stolen someday, but so far so good. I've gone away on vacation for two weeks at a time and no one has messed with 'em yet, thank goodness.

Everyone to their own tastes, of course...but it's really too bad you can't appreciate the finer points of windchimes. Why not look at it this way? Isn't it better to hear the delightful sound of a windchime than say an endless procession of loud and aggressive rock, country or rap music, screaming kids, blaring TVs, slamming doors, fighting couples, a chain saw, traffic or even gunshots?

Besides, a person has a right to have a windchime on their private property if they want.

    P.S.

I love my windchimes and will NEVER get rid of them!

  14. and plays LOUD music all the time.

  15. steal them and hide them all :) noone will know

  16. Agreed.

The house I use up in a small place very similar to what you describe--maybe 14 or so houses on the road, then the blasted chimes breaking the peace.

    Grrr!
