I want to get health insurance for my little shih tzu but I'm not sure how to go about finding the right company and plan...

I really don't want to pay more than $20 a month but at the same time I want to make sure she is properly secured...

Any suggestions?

  1. Make sure you contact a few pet insurance providers before you settle.  You want to either check your local yellow pages or research online for a local pet insurance company.  That way, if you have any issues with your pet or insurance, you can interact with them in person.  A good pet insurance directory that i've found helpful is http://www.petinsurance411.com  You can search for a local insurance provider in your area.  Good luck!

  2. I work in a Vet's office, and see a fair amount of pet insurance.  I don't know the costs, but I can tell you that a lot of pet owners pay us upfront and then are reimbursed by the insurance company.  We prefer to do business with VPI and recommend them to our customers.  I find them to be reasonable in what they cover for our clients.  You might want to check with your vet so see if they recommend a particular insurance company.

  3. Pet insurance can be a beneficial thing to buy if it's carefully researched.  More often than not dissatisfied pet insurance customers come from those who really didn't understand their plan and what was/wasn't covered.

For around $20/month you probably will have a plan that covers more emergency type conditions.  For around $20/month more (depending on the company) you should be able to get a plan that covers more things, and possibly even some well care visits.

Pet insurance is different than human health insurance, it pays out to the policy holder in the form of a reimbursement.

It's important to decide the type of coverage you want.  The more full coverage you desire, the more it will cost.  Some owners end up better off if they have a policy that covers emergencies and use cash to help when something isn't covered.  Other people don't have access to that much cash, so it's better for them to pay the $40/month up front.  It really depends on what makes you feel comfortable.

I would read about some of the terms you will find in policies.  I have recommended http://www.thebestpetinsurance.com before for that - also a good entry in Wikipedia.  If you understand some of the terms/definitions it helps when you shop around for a good policy.

To find a company, try a search for keywords "pet insurance" and try a few of those companies.  Two new companies, Trupanion and PurinaCare would be worth a look as well.  As you narrow it down to a couple of contenders, it might be worthwhile to call each and ask them to explain how a something would be covered.  For example, a broken leg, and compare the companies that way to help in making a final decision.

Hope this helps, best of luck in your search.
