Hi, I'm looking into getting a pet Lizard. I'm looking for a lizard that is very dosile and handable. Something that would just sit on my sholder and not try to run off...

I was also looking for a lizard that wouldnt get too big.

So after reserching, I found the Crested Geco. Do you think this would be a good choice? or Do you have any other suggestions?

Thank You

  1. leopard geckos require little maintenance and like to sit on your shoulder but be careful with their tails the drop it very easily and they eat the usual crickets and only need a fish aquarium, under the tank heater (no red basking lamps they will blind the gecko), sand and something to hide under (the bottom of a plastic cup for example)screen for the top, and they cant climb up so thats good because with a lizard it could jump onto a wall and all over your ceilings and you will never catch it!!!

  2. LEOPARD GECKOS ALL THE WAY............ they only grow 2 about 6-9 inches in size and love being held and are great pets!!!!

  3. Geckos tend to be on the snappish side.  They're more fragile than other lizards too.

Bearded Dragons are great sholder sitters.  They'll get a little big for a kid's shoulder though.   (I have no idea of your age, sorry if I offend)

  4. Crested geckos are very handle-able but you need to do you research here is a great forum I am a member of myself and I have a crested gecko http://geckosunlimited.com/

They are easy to care for but you really need to read up I think they are more playful like they like to jump around from hand to hand.

Now if you want a lizard that will just lay on you and fall asleep go for the bearded dragon but they get twice the size of the crestie and have more care requirements and of course have to take up more space with a larger terrarium.

I don't know of any forums for bearded dragons sorry but really you should join geckos unlimited great forum great people and also they have tons of information on other species of geckos so you will be able to fine one for you! Also you can find a breeder there too if you like close to Ohio then look up Docmurder there he is a great breeder say Kyle_S sent you or even if you don't live close to ohio he can ship it which he did for me and they are fine through it.....

    Best of luck!

NO SAND FOR GECKOS! Causes impaction....

  5. Hello; with what you are looking for in a lizard; I really wouldn't recommend a Crested Gecko. While they are very docile; they tend to jump off of whoever is handling them with little to no warning. If the Crested Gecko was high up on a shoulder; it could be seriously injured or even killed should it leap off of you at an inopportune time. :(

While all just about all lizards (even the incredibly sweet-tempered ones) will need a bit of work when you first get them in order to be as docile as they possibly can be; there are a few that tend to tame down quicker than others. I would highly recommend a Leopard Gecko, a Viper Gecko, or an African Fat-tailed Gecko. All are nocturnal so they don't need UV lighting, low maintenance, docile, interesting looking, hardy, small, and do quite well with handling. :)

Here are care sheets for all of the Gecko species I just named:

    Leopard Gecko:

    Viper Gecko:

    African Fat-tailed Gecko:

If you are looking for something a little bit larger (but not too big) and a tad higher maintenance but still incredibly docile, intelligent, and interesting; I would suggest a Bearded Dragon. Here is a care sheet for them; as well. :)

I hope this helps, and if you have any further questions at all on the subject or would like more suggestions on a good lizard species; please feel free to message me and I will be more than happy to assist you. :)

Good luck on your lizard search!

  6. I had a lizard that sat on my shoulder for 4 hours at work one day, his name was Spirit and he was a Spiny Crevace lizard. (scelorporus poinsetti) He was the second lizard we had of this type and they both loved hanging around on your shoulder and are very docile.  You can house one for it's entire life in a 20 gallon tank.  They are found in the desert SW of the US.  They have a beautiful blue on their belly and a collar on their neck. If the belly is covered in blue and you see pores along the upper part of the leg (femoral pores) then you have a male. One downside is that they usually have mites when you get them.  A simple mite bath will cure the problem. They live a long time, we had Spirit for over 5 years and we got him fully grown. They eat crickets and worms, no veggies sorry. The first page is a care sheet http://www.jackspets.com/pet_tips/reptil...

Pics-first is head the second is the belly of a male showing that brillant blue.
