Pet Rat Diet!?

Question

Right now I feed them suebees mix with Nutro Lite Dog food (and some fruit and veggies). Then I heard this wasnt complete for them. Is there a better diet out there that I could feed them? I could order online if I had to. What do you feed your rats? I prefer detailed answers please.

Suebees isn't the best mix for your rat. Debbie D states that it is not a nutritionally complete diet for rats, but she does give one that she has researched and believes to be the best homemade diet available.  You can find it at http://www.ratfanclub.org/diet.html   She gives you a lot of options so if you live in a place where one food is more readily available, you can use that instead.  She also goes into detail about rat nutrition and why the diet she has is so good.  She also gives the serving size of each part so you are never guessing.

I know you said you prefer detailed answers, but honestly all I would do is copy and paste what is found right on that link as it offers you exactly what it is you are looking for here.  Take a look. =) You'll love it!

Wait... are you saying that you feed your rat DOG FOOD?!!!!

If you are, (and I HOPE you're not) then STOP!!!!! Dog food is NOT the right diet for rats!!!! Go to a pet store and find food for rats. Try Fiesta, this is really good.

It's true that Suebee's isn't complete on it's own. Your rats should be getting fresh vegetables daily and fruit occasionally. Nutro Lite isn't horrible, but it's not the best you could be using. I'd recommend Natural Balance Reduced Calorie Formula.

There should be many elements of a rats diet!!!

here are some of the most important things in a rats diet-

Many fruits and vegetables- melons, carrots, lettuce, etc.

Vitamins

Yogurt( treats which they love!!)

Grains

Here are things that you should avoid feeding your rats

chocolate,

raw beans,

carbonated drinks,

raw sweet potato,

blue cheese,

raw red cabbage,

raw Brussel sprouts,

raw artichokes,

orange juice,

green bananas,

green potato skin and eyes,

rhubarb,

dried corn,

cucumber,

radishes,

spinach,

collards,

turnip greens,

beets,

almonds and,

Swiss chard

Suebee's is a good mix.

Nutro Lite is also not a bad choice.

The BEST diet for rats isn't really known, but you are on the right track, in my opinion. Some say lab blocks, others say dog food. You just have to see how your rats are doing on that diet and decide for yourself. :) I have heard good things about both Suebee's mix and Nutro Lite for ratties. Since you are supplementing this with fruits & veggies, I don't see any problems with the diet. :)
