Question:

Pet Rats and Pet Snakes...just a quick question...?

I'm sooo excited about getting a pet rat soon, my family is PCSing to South Korea and leaving me here in Georgia all by myself, I'm hoping to bond with a rat so I'm not so lonely.

I'd be keeping my rat in an apartment that doesn't allow for dogs, but is fine with "caged/aquarium animals". I just recently found out there's a possibility that a roomy may be getting a boa or python. O_O I'm wondering what are the real potential dangers of having a rat in my room, behind a closed door, and a snake in the next room over, also behind a closed door. The last thing I want is my ex-boyfriend's snake to eat my new rat.

  1. "Ex-boyfriend"? Your rat is as good as a boa dung.

  2. just make sure your rat is secure in its cage.

  3. Tell the land owner about your situation. Then go over to the snake's house and make sure he is secure. Also make sure you rat is in a VERY secure cage that is very sturdy and strong. Best of luck to you and your rat!

  4. I'd be really careful about having a rat and a snake. My friend had a snake and it would escape all the time. I'd also make sure your friend knows the rules about having snakes in your particular city, sometimes they don't allow certain breeds. Make sure the tank lid is clamped down and maybe some books on the lid to be safe. Snakes can sneak out of the tiniest holes.

I know it might seem smart to put your rat in an aquarium for safety, but those usually don't provide enough air circulation (nor space) to keep the rat healthy.

As for your rat, if you are going to get one, you should get two. Rats are very sociable creatures and could use a buddy for when you're not there. Additionally, you should think of adopting rats from your local humane society. They usually have a few if you're in a decent sized city and rats sit in shelters a looong time before getting adopted.

  5. First off, it's important to get 2 rats. Even if you bathe it in affection they are like people in needing company from their own kind. If alone they develop mental problems like: depression, aggression.lethargy. and may even self harm.

Now about the snake. I have a ball python, rats, cat, and bearded dragon all in my room. Really no where else to put them. When I got my rats I noticed that my BD was staring them down and my python become more active slithering around his cage. The rats seemed oblivious to those two and only puffed up when the cat came near but eventually my cat got the hint not to touch them. Point being is that, especially sense they're in different rooms, they may sense each other for a while [ more so apparently the snake senses the rat] but they'll eventually get over each other. Just make sure both housings are securely closed when not being interacted with. So all would be fine.

  6. OMG! O_O all i can say is RIP new rat.
