Pet Selection for a kid of 3 yrs?

Hi ,

I would like to gift my son 3 yrs old with a puppy which would be an ideal one for the kids ,any pet shops in Coimbatore?how much would lab cost?

You could get a dog fro your local animal shelter. Get a mutt!

Retrievers (labs, goldens, setters, etc) are very good with small children. The are gentle with the very young ones and very tolerant of having there tails pulled. And, when the child grows up they are very playful and fun to run around with.

If you get him one now it could be come his friend until he becomes an adult,

I would strongly suggest getting an animal from the shelter. They know they have been saved and are very loyal. It doesn't have to be a pure bred. Even a "mut" with a mixture of the above would be great.

a dog is not always the smartest idea for a young child a kitten is perfect

because is isnt always running around a dog could hurt a young kid  if you really want a dog get a small one

well first of all be honest.. the dog is YOURS.. a 3 year old kid cannot pay for a dog, or care for it.. the dog is YOURS...

NEVER trust a kid and a dog alone together..

NEVER NEVER NEVER buy from a pet store - you will pay too much for a low quality (but cute) pet.. and be supporting a cruel industry of breeding ONLY for profit (not genetics, health or anything else) they breed cheap and sell high - they are STORES

go to your local SPCA or pound and adopt.. preferably a mature dog - already trained and good with kids..

Get him a dog that YOU will be comfortable taking care of.

Labs and boxers are good dogs for kids. Get one from a shelter and at least the adoption fee cost will go back into helping rescued animals. A lot of good pets end up in shelters. It's a myth to think shelter dogs have temper problems.

Breeders are jerks who just rip other people off.

Kittens are a good choice for a 3yr old. Puppies are not! Puppies are way to hard to handle while havin a small child wait till ur kid is 8 or 9 to get a puppy. U can always get a trained dog just not a pup.

DONT get a puppy from one of those fancy stores. They come from puppy mills which is BAD. I've gotten a dog from one of those place for $900, and he turned out to have a heart condition, also my aunt got one from one of those places and it had a stroke. So those places arent the best idea. Try your local SPCA or animal control,plus they're usually very cheap there.

I suggest a labrador retriever, theyre very freindly to kids , very protective and smart.

great thought . Congreats. Pet specially a puppy is good idea for giving the company to a kid but in teen age  or in minimum at 5or 6 at his age.i think u'r decision is little bit early . now he cant afford his hygine  and can't take care for pet too . i think u should wait for this decision.

I wouldnt buy a puppy from a pet store because you dont know the background of the puppy and the puppy could have poor bloodlines or could be sick. I would buy one from a breeder. you can try your local paper, or puppyfind.com or puppysites.com

defintaly not a hamster becuase they can sqeeze then to death plus they only live for 2 years. Not a cat they hide to much plus i wouldnt want it scratching your kid. Hermit crab would be good to look at but they dont do much plus they pinch. Frog might be good but not for like holding.  A fish if he likes to watch things swim. New puppy becuase they love to play and that si what most kids want is to somebody to play with them!

I have always had dogs "Shelties" (Shetland Sheep Dogs) they are great protectors of children and are very sweet and loveable, When the kids were small, no matter what they did to those Shelties...they never bit them. They would sleep by their door at night and then run out to get us when they would hear a noise from the kids.

What ever breed you buy-I would not go to a pet store..better to look in the newspaper for local people who breed dogs. You can go to their home and see the mother and father and usually pick the pup of your choice. This is how I got mine and is an excellent way to buy a pure breed. You can meet the dog owners and see for yourself...

Too often pet stores buy dogs from those breeders who we see in the tv news that have horrible conditions, the dogs aren't usually good quality pure breeds and pet stores overcharge.
