  1. yes they can eat tomatoes but if you want a natural treat go into your garden and pick some clovers and dandelions, (as long as you don't use pesticides) they are natural food and usually tortoises love them, but to be quite honest although the diet it is being fed is not a good one changing it or adding too many new things could cause diarrhea, grapes are ok but russians should not be fed too much fruit as it causes digestive problems, but getting some cucumber or greens, kale or even a different lettuce mix will make a nice change for your friends tortoise here is a site you can see what to feed a russian tortoise maybe you could show it to your friend when they get back and they can slowly change the little fellas diet to a more natural one  http://russiantortoise.org/care_sheet.ht...     http://www.tortoisetrust.org/    best of luck honey

  2. I dont like using lettuce.Try greenbeans and cantelop we had a tortoise and we feed him alsorts of veggie

  3. There are 35 species of tortoises, and they eat a few different diets,

If your tortoise is a grassland species, like the Russian, Hermann's, Greek, or Sulcata, t should have mostly fibrous plants with some dark leafy greens, and very little fruit. Try the leaves from mulberry, grape, dandelion, or plantain; cactus pads or fruit, edible flowers, hibiscus leaves or flowers, etc.

If it is a forest species, like the Red-foot, Hinge-back or Elongated, it can do most tropical fruits, melons, pineapple, or strawberry, or small amounts of any other fruit.

While variety is important, don't sweat it too much for a short term.

  4. What type of tortoise is it? If its a desert tortoise they love all sorts of fruits and especially dandelions. However, they're illegal to keep so hopefully its not. Just feed different sorts of fruits like apples, pears, bits of bananas, or carrots. Just not too much. They love flowers, but make sure they're not poisonous.

  5. Well I've been raising 6 different species of tortoises for years and I found for every tortoise that fruits are not good for them it can cause diseases and shell disorders. Fruit is good 3 times a month but that's it. A tortoise's diet should consist of mainly grasses and leafy greens.

    =D Good Luck!

  6. tortoises are grassland animals, they need greens, weeds, and veggies.

NO FRUIT. it #1 gives them the runs, 2 has a negative effect on health, 3 makes them fat. Yes turtles can get fat.

Feed only weeds, greens (no spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage)m flowers are great treats too.

    Tomatos are fruit, avoid them

if this is a redfoot/yellow foot, then fruit is okay, every other day in small amounts.

  7. Here is a link to complete Russian tortoise recommended foods.  They need a large variety--lettuce is not a good diet!
