I have a big problem. I have a family of birds. A Father Bird, A son bird and a daughter bird and another bird not related to any of them. The Mother bird unfortunately died in an accident. Well lately the Father bird has been hanging out with the daughter bird alot and they've always been good friends so we thought nothing of it. But now it seems the everytime the father bird gets near the daughter he tries to mate with her. I don't know what to do, i split them up but the father bird seems very mad now. Any experts out there know what i should do?? How could something like this happen??

  1. Time to move out of the trailerpark.

  2. Thats just what animals do. You could try and put the female in her own cage. Thats about it.

  3. Animals don't really understand not to breed in their bloodline, I'm not even sure they understand bloodlines. If the daughter ends up having offspring, it'll probably be all right, since they have a broader gene pool, and you probably won't end up with mutants, but please separate/spay (If spaying is possible with birds, I don't know.) as soon as possible, before that can happen.

  4. Animals (especially birds) aren't incestuous! Have you ever heard of breeding an entire colony of birds from a single pair? Is that incest?

Doesn't mean you can do it too though

  5. "Incest" is a man made aberration. In the animal kingdom there is no such thing and breeding with relatives is rather common.

    Not to worry.

Except... unless a female is properly matured and has the required extra nutrition, a bird can suffer several complications from breeding. So if you are going to do it, then know what you are getting into.

The female will have to be separated permanently. Do keep them near each other for the company though, as they are still an established flock.

Though it is possible, most small birds are not sterilized due to the risks, expense, and the lack of available avian Vets that are willing.

Depending on the breed, if you do want to induce a specific pair, then give them nesting supplies and contain them together... and hope for the best.

  6. I don't know about bird incest.  Check with a wildlife officer or read it on the internet.
