so my mom wanted a dog, she went out and found this big lab mix that had been formerly abused. shes big, rowdy, loud and requires allot of attention. but shes also very sweet. the problem is we (had) 4 cats. the dog got pissy at one of my cats which caused him to run away, we found him dead three days later next to a lake. we believe he was killed by someone. I'm not saying its the dogs fault hes gone but if the dog hadn't done that the chain of events leading to his death wwouldnot have ooccurredand he probably would still be here. two of the cats are ok with the dog but usually just avoid it. but the last one i feel terrible for her. shes too scared to even go into the house. my mom loves this dog, me and my step dad both like her, but we have some mixed feelings. please help me, i feel terrible and i don'tknow what to do.

  1. we have a dog and a cat and they seem ok wit eachother but i have seen some dogs kill cats. maybe wat u could do is set up shelves that the dog cant reach so the cats can feel safe it mite be a good idea to put their food up their to as for the dog there mite be a way to train him to like cats.....bring the dog into a room with no cats (have him on a leash) have plenty of treats....now start giving the dog treats(chicken or somthin soft would probly work best) and have some one put the cat into the room. keep giving the dog treats(if he turns away and barks or growls or wat eve at the cat stop giving him treats and take the cat out and try agian) then after bout a minit take the cat out of the room and stop the treats. then put the cat back in and start with treats agian and keep doing this several times with less treats until finialy the dog will probly exept that cats r good....i hope that helps!!

  2. The dog needs obedience training immediately.  Look into good trainers in your area who train primarily through positive reinforcement.  With proper training a dog can be wonderful (and calm) around cats.

Your family owes it to your cats to provide them with a safe and comfortable home.  The only way that is going to happen is with intensive training of the new dog.  Also, make sure that the dog is getting tons of exercise.  My lab cross really needs to retrieve running full out for 45 minutes or so a day to be completely calm.  A short walk is not going to cut it.

    Good luck with the training.

  3. Don't worry, all things happen for the good and the glory of God.  Something is only bad if that is how you choose to look at it.   I thank God for letting me have a flat tire when I'm in a hurry.  I always ask for His protection.  Maybe that flat tire kept me from getting into a bad reck further down the road.  Nobody knows why this happened to you all except God.

  4. get the dog into Obedience lessons ASAP!

this will help the dog learn socialzation and the command "LEAVE IT'

your mom should have spent longer looking for the right dog.

sorry about the cat who died..
