i recently had a dwarf rabbit (4 months old) and ever since i brought it home, it would "spaz out" and run around crazily and twitch and bang into the cage. it would even kick all its bedding out of the cage. we let him out often, and he did the same thing out of the cage. unfortunately, one morning i went to feed him and i found him on his side, not breathing =( was something wrong with him? i would prefer an answer from someone w/ experience.. for future refrence so if i get another rabbit what to expect.

  1. Your rabbit has brain damage. Those are the signs that indicates that your rabbit was droped or hit hard enough for it to have trauma.

  2. Usually it twitches and runs around when it's happy. Sometimes my rabbit does that inside its cage, but I think it did that because it was frustrated and wanted to get out and play. Maybe it started 'spazing out' while you weren't there and somehow hurt itself. They get injured pretty easily. My rabbit once got injured from trying to hop away while my mom was holding it and I think it pulled a muscle or something so it was on its side unable to get up and it looked like it was dying, but a couple minutes later it was back to normal again. I'm guessing your rabbit had a more serious injury.

  3. I was told once by a rabbit rescue that rabbits jump and twist their bodies wildly when they're extremely happy or excited. All of my rabbits used to kick their bedding out of the cage. I don't think his death was related to that behavoir.

If you haven't already, go to a petstore and buy a book on rabbits. It's always good to be educated on your pets. If it was nothing you did wrong, perhaps the bun just had a genetic defect or something.

  4. It is common for rabbits to run around and kick their legs when they are very happy, mine do it all the time.  I wouldn't think the death had anything to do with that behavior.  What kind of bedding did you use? It could have been something he ate.  However it was probably a medical condition, maybe the stress of being in a new environment was too much.  Usually a rabbit who dies suddenly does so from cardiac arrest.

  5. contack a local vet
