Pet rat owners, do you know of any harmless application that will stop a rat from chewing on certain articles?

There are products you can buy from the pet store that you can spray on things you don't want them to chew on. Just make sure you wear gloves when spraying it, because it's really hard to get off your hands and tastes bad for about a week.

I don't know about rats specifically, but my cat HATES a product called, "No Stay".  It's by Pet Organics and I got it at Petsmart.

It's not toxic.  It doesn't sting.  It doesn't really smell all that strong, but my cat avoids it like the plague.  Maybe it'll work for your rat.

Bitter Apple is another good one.  Also available at pet stores.  Beware, some animals learn to like the taste and will be attracted to it.
