Pet store problem?

Everywhere I've read i've always heard never to buy hamster's from pet stores that leave the males and females run freely together. However I asked the worker why, and she said it's because they're trying to mate them intentionally so it should be OK in that case right?

  1. It's ok if you don't mind obtaining a pregnant female.

Petstores should never intentionally try to breed hamsters.

This is not a sight that should be on a sales floor.

Some petstores (petsmart) do not allow males to be shipped to stores with females. They only keep one s*x at a time.

Where some petstores separate them, and some do not care.

If the caretaker of the animal department is responsible, regardless of the regulations his/her company has, they would separate them to the best of their ability.

I've seen too many families come back with their kids crying because the mommy hamster ate the babies.

  2. Not really

  3. Pet shop get young aniamals and try to sell before the mate or before they give birth (not a nice thing to happen on you)

  4. I've bred hamsters and worked in a pet store and they do breed constantly best bet is to buy a male or a baby so you know it's not pregnant but those tiny ones you can't tell most of the time well....if it helps if she is pregnant when you get one home most likely when she has them she'll eat the babies because of the move if not sell the babies back to the pet store  I've done that a bunch of times! I recommend buying a rat instead though they are alot nicer.

  5. No. It's not ok; at least, it isn't in my opinion. Pet store animals shouldn't be bred. You don't know where they came from or how they were bred. You don't know what type of genetic problems they may have. You could end up passing it onto their offspring. It's not a good thing to do. If someone is trying to breed an animal, they should do it responsibly. Pet stores simply aren't responsible breeders.

  6. yeh should be but that could be an excuse

  7. def not.

pet store personnel i have learned from buying rats from them, that they cannot decipher a male rat from a female or a male hamster from a female. They didn't have the proper education to do so in the first place, but its not really that hard, I learned from Vet Class in High School, and the internet.

  8. Things like this are the reason I refuse to buy animals from pet stores, or even purchase anything in a store that sells animals.

First off, there are many hamsters in shelters that need homes.  There are many that are euthanized because there are simply not enough homes.  The last thing the world needs is pet stores selling animals, let alone pet stores intentionally breeding.  It seems that they want to send unsuspecting people home with pregnant animals.

Also, pet store animals are not necessarily of a quality that should be bred.  There's no care going into looking at the health of the line.  Also, if the hamsters came in at the same time there is a likelihood that they are related.  Inbreeding is rarely a good thing.

  9. I guess it could be ok. But, if you are looking for nice hamsters, I would definatilly go to the Andersons...(More for your Home!lol)
