Petar Stoychev and Marcela Cunha win 25km Open Water Swim titles - 2011 FINA World Championships
Day five of the 2011 FINA World Championships saw the scintillating swims of Petar Stoychev and Marcela Cunha in the 25km Open Water Swim meets in Shanghai, China, on Friday, July 22.
The session of the meet conducted the Men’s and Women’s 25km Open Water Swims, where Petar Stoychev of Bulgaria took home the golden crown in the Men’s 25km Open Water Swim, while Marcela Cunha snagged the gold medal in the Women’s 25km Open Water Swim.
Stoychev secured the title in a sterling time of 5 hours, 10 minutes and 39.8 seconds. More importantly, the win was the first gold title for the Bulgarian open water swimmer in his career. Earlier, Stoychev won three bronze medals in the 25km meet and one
bronze title in the 10km Open Water Swim category during the period of 2003-2010.
After grabbing the gold medal in the corresponding race, Stoychev was pleased with his individual performance in the World Championships.
In the meantime, Vladimir Dyatchin of Russia captured the silver medal with an impressive time of 5 hour, 11 minutes and 15.6 seconds. Csaba Gercsak of Hungary took home the bronze title with a time of 5 hour, 11 minutes and 18.6 seconds.
Jose Hervas Francisco Jodar of Spain wound up fourth in a time of 5 hours, 11 minutes and 20.4 seconds, whereas, Trent Grimsey of Australian earned fifth place honours with a time of 5 hours, 11 minutes and 28.2 seconds
In the Women’s 25km Open Water Swim, Brazilian swimmer, Ana Marcela Cunha earned the gold medal with a triumphant time of 5 hours, 29 minutes and 22.9 seconds. Angela Maurer of Germany grabbed silver in a sterling time of 5 hours, 29 minutes and 25.0 seconds,
while the bronze medal went to Alice Franco of Italy in a time of 5 hours, 29 minutes and 30.8 seconds.
Olga Beresnyeva of Ukraine finished fourth with a time of 5 hours, 29 minutes and 35.6 seconds, whereas, Martina Grimaldi of Italy was placed fifth in 5 hours, 29 minutes and 36.2 seconds.
