Pete Carril believes Los Angeles Lakers can be successful with Princeton Offence – NBA Update
The Los Angeles Lakers have made some big time moves over the summer which has involved them re-shaping their roster in order for them to get back in title contention.
However, these changes are not only restricted to the players as the Lakers are also looking to change their offensive system by bringing in Eddie Jordan and his Princeton offence. This new offence would revolve around their big
men and other player’s ability to set screens and make back-door cuts.
Lakers would not have many problems running the Princeton offence as they have the best centre in Dwight Howard and one of the more dominant power forwards in the league, Pau Gasol. These two will form a combination with arguably
the best back court duo in the league at present, one which feature the legendary Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant.
There will always be doubters but Pete Carril is convinced that the Lakers can not only win it all, but can also adapt to his brain child offensive tactic;
“I imagine that if the [Lakers] guys want to do it, and [the coaches] can convince them that it’d better for them, I think they’ll do it. They have the right ingredients, all the passers. They have really good passers there. The
only one I don’t really know much about as a passer is Howard. But [Pau] Gasol can pass and he can shoot, and of course Bryant and Nash can shoot, and whatever they call him now [Metta World Peace], I know he can pass. It all depends on Howard, and then what
kind of bench they have…
Generally speaking, that offense doesn’t work when two things are prevalent. One is when they treat it like a robotic thing. And the other is when they don’t want to do it.”
This offensive style can be beneficial for the Lakers who have spent the past few seasons running the Triangle offence which revolved around their big men and was kind of similar to the Princeton offence.
But the key to being successful would require them to let go of set plays and instead adapt to what kind of a defensive scheme is being run by the opponents. There may be struggles at the start but if the Lakers can configure the
system, they can be a really potent side.
