Pete Mackanin smart to escape harsh questions – MLB News
Pete Mackanin expressed his ambition to concentrate more on the managerial and the disciplinarian issues rather than talking about the previous mishaps that happened with the Boston Red Sox, according to major news sources in Boston.
After the Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington interviewed Pete Mackanin, the bench coach of the Philadelphia Phillies, the reporters asked some burning questions to one of the many shortlisted candidates on Monday night.
Replying to a question concentrating on the Red Sox mid-game drinking in the clubhouse, Mackanin cunningly answered that he would like to handle both ends of his job rather than concentrating only on a managerial position.
"I think you have to have an element of both sides of that in order to be a good motivator," he said. "I think there's a juggling act that's involved in that, where you have to have enough discipline but at the same time let the players play easy. You don't
want them tense."
When asked to give an opinion over the Red Sox September collapse, the possible candidate stated that at that time he was more concerned about the performance of the Philadelphia Phillies.
He commented that he would not like to discuss this point at all because he was not the part of the club at that time.
"So I'd like to think it's time for me to manage at this level," he said. "I don't ask (why). My wife asks me all the time."
Mackanin, who was the part of the Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos, Phillies and Minnesota Twins in his playing career, diverted the topic towards his past memories. He shared memories of the time he spent with the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Pete had served as interim manager for the Pirates in 2005 and for the Reds in 2007. He has also been the part of the New York Yankees, Pirates and Expos besides serving in the Caribbean, Australia and South America.
It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox decide to go with Mackanin to help lead the team to a successful 2012 season.
