Peter Alliss and Dan Jenkins criticise the introduction of belly putters in golf – Golf News
Peter Alliss and Dan Jenkins recently attended the induction ceremony for their names in the Official World Golf Hall of Fame on Monday, May 7, 2012.
One of the highlights of the day included their comments on the introduction of the belly putter in the game of golf.
They believe that the belly putter should not have been made a part of the sport, as it has really changed the concept of putting, which they used to watch in the past.
Jenkins started telling about their conversation, which they had a day earlier. He said: “I said, `The person who invented the belly putter ought to be put in prison,’” Jenkins said. Alliss picked up from there, “He’s talking rubbish,” Alliss said. “Belly
putters? Sending a fellow to prison? He should be flogged first and then sent to prison”.
Jenkins is the third addition to the Hall of Fame as a writer, however, he is the only one to be included during his life.
The other two were inducted for their huge contributions to the game of golf after they left this world.
Jenkins covered a total of 210 major championships since his first experience in the 1951 US Open.
"I'm particularly pleased to be taken in as a vertical human," Jenkins said. “The biggest change for me covering majors is that I used to park at the clubhouse, and the players used to talk to me”.
Jenkins expressed his pleasure over being placed with legendary Ben Hogan outside the Hall of Fame in the Walk of Champions.
Apart from Jenkins and Alliss, there were other three players who were added to the Hall including the four-time major winner Phil Mickelson, the two-time major winner Sandy Lyle and the four-time LPGA major champion Hollis Stacy.
At the induction ceremony, the PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem especially offered his thanks to Phil Mickelson for being a role model for the young players.
He said that people take him as their role model because of his commitment to the game and the level of professionalism that he shows on and off the course.
