Peter Burling, Blair Tuke win bronze for New Zealand in Weymouth and Portland International Regatta
New Zealand’s Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have grabbed the bronze medal in 49er class of 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta, which is the official test event of 2012 London Olympics. The Kiwi pair also won the Men’s High Performance Skiff
(49er) Medal Race on the final day of the event, which was held at the Weymouth Bay in England.
Both sailors had a tremendous sail in the final races of 49er class at Weymouth Bay. The weather conditions on the final day were ideal with 10 to 11 knots breeze gusting over the racing area on Weymouth waters. The Kiwis won the medal race in a dramatic
fashion, as they crossed the finish line just seven seconds before their nearest competitor.
While speaking to reporters after the medal race victory, Team Director and 49er Coach Jez Fanston said, “Peter and Blair have sailed well right through the regatta and it was really nice to see them take the medal race win and then stand on the podium.
It is a great result for them, but in typical fashion they want to do even better.”
New Zealand grabbed another medal race victory when Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie sailed brilliantly in the 470 Women to claim first place. However, in the overall standings of 470 Women, they finished fourth. On the other hand, Jon-Paul Tobin also won RS:X
Men medal race on the final day but overall he stood fourth in the standings.
