Peter Crouch: Profile of a great football player
Peter Crouch, the tall and talented footballer, has captured the hearts and minds of millions of English football fans with his impressive goal scoring ability and his skills with the ball. Until recently, Crouch had the distinction of being the tallest
player in the Premier League and that was something that really surprised a lot of people out there; how someone that tall could be so nimble and agile on his feet. He is a prolific goal scorer and having had a great start at the junior level, he has made
his way up to one of the top clubs in the League. The future looks very bright for the tall striker.
Peter was born in 1981 in Cheshire and he developed a keen interest in football at an early age. Even when young, he had a special interest in the sport and became a ball boy at the age of ten. After school Crouch joined Tottenham Hotspurs after playing
for their youth team. Without playing a single game for his new club, the young striker was given out on loan to various clubs around Europe. In 2000, the Spurs sold Crouch to another team, this time the Queens Park Rangers for a sum of £60,000. During his
first and only season with the Rangers, the newly acquired talent proved his worth by scoring ten goals for the team. Despite of this fact the club was relegated but Crouch was sold to Portsmouth. He managed to score 18 goals for his new team but could not
help the club advance in the rankings.
In 2002, Aston Villa secured the prolific goal scorer from Portsmouth for £5 million and even though he scored on his debut and twice more in three games, he was soon loaned to Norwich City. Soon after his move to Norwich, he made a real impression with
the fans and even though he only scored four times in almost 15 starts for the club, the supporters loved him. He returned to Villa and scored a few goals for them as well. His spell at Norwich renewed interest in him from several clubs and he was eventually
sold by Villa to move to Southampton in 2004. Despite of scoring a lot of goals and playing extremely well, the tall man could not see his team to any real success and they were relegated. So for the umpteenth time in his career, Crouch was sold to another
club.
This time the club was Liverpool and he joined the top club with high hopes. But he suffered a long goal drought that brought him intense scrutiny from the media. The goal drought lasted for 19 games and eventually he managed to break it with a fantastic
strike against Wigan Athletic in 2005. He led Liverpool to an FA Cup win in 2006 and he ended the 2006-2007 season as Liverpool’s top scorer with 18 goals. He soon left Liverpool to join Portsmouth again for a reported fee of £11 million. Once again he showed
why he was worth that large transfer fee by scoring numerous goals for his new club. In 2009, Crouch once again returned to the club where he started his football career, Tottenham, and after years of hopping around and moving all over the country, it seems
he has finally come home.
Crouch has also played a vital role in the England team but it seems his club career has been a lot more successful over the years. The thing that sets the talented footballer apart from all others in the sport is his immense height. He is 6 foot 7 inches
tall and was until the arrival of Stefan Maierhofer, the tallest player in the entire league. His height has been both an advantage and a bane for him, because it allows him to leap over other players to get the ball in the air and at the same time, he has
been ridiculed by the media and by the fans for being so tall.
Time will tell what this huge player will be able to do at Tottenham, but if his previous club record is anything to go by he looks likely to score a whole heap of goals and help his club achieve great things in the coming years.
