Peter Fowler and Bill Longmuir share the lead at Brunei Masters - European Senior Tour
The Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters sanctioned by the European Senior Tour commenced today at the beautiful par-71 Empire Hotel and Country Club in Brunei. Australian Peter Fowler and Bill Longmuir of Scotland were the front runners after the first round
with a score of five-under par respectively.
Fowler, who was not feeling well before the round, carded a superb round to tie the lead in the Championship. The Aussie had six birdies on his card and a lone bogey. The only bogey came on the challenging par-3, 7th where his iron shot landed
in bunker, as he failed to make a par as he three putted on that hole. The former European Tour member will be looking forward after his first round to mark his maiden victory on the Senior Tour. His putter favoured him throughout the day and his illness was
in back of his mind, as his approach shots were accurate.
After the first round he said, “I was stroking the ball well today on the greens which always important on the courses in Asia to get a good rhythm going. I enjoyed my 30 feet putt on the first and from there on never looked back.”
The experienced veteran Longmuir has already eight wins playing on this tour and is looking for his ninth. He carded a flawless round of five-under par which included five birdies. Longmuir has loads of experience on his shoulders and showed his class on
the field against his opponents. The Scottish golfer was more than satisfied with his round and was confident of continuing his form in the next two rounds. He marked his eighth win last year at the Handa Senior Masters.
Five players are tied for the third position and have a deficit of just one shot over the leaders. Sang-ho Choi, Jamnian Chitprasong, Mike Harwood, Angel Franco and Tsang-te Chen all had a score of four-under par 67.
The inexperienced veteran from Korea, Choi had a bogey-free card with no drop shots. He had four birdies on the first day and was content with his performance. Choi was confident that he will continue his fine touch through to the final day on Sunday to
lift the title.
Barry Lane, who played on the European Tour, trails by just two strokes over the leaders. Lane, who has also been a Ryder Cup member, posted a round of three-under par and is just two shots behind the front runners. The English golfer only has one win on
European Senior Tour and is hopeful of improving his record. Four birdies and a single bogey was not enough to tie him for the lead at the top, but he was confident of improving his position.
The defending champion from Thailand, Boonchu Ruangkit, is way down the leader board with a score of one-under par 70. The Thai golfer had a rather up-and-down round with five birdies followed by four bogeys on his card.
The second round will start tomorrow and some more under-par rounds are expected. Some experienced players present on the field will be hoping to improve their positions.
