Peter Fowler gets into contention early in the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters
On Thursday, Peter Fowler was voted the 2011 Senior Tour player of the year by his fellow Members. The very next day witnessed him make a strong start at the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters on the Duke’s Course at the Woburn Golf Club.
Fowler struggled in the early stages of the round, as he suffered three bogeys against a lone birdie for a 37 on the front nine. However, a birdie-eagle on the first two holes of the back nine marked a strong comeback in the round.
Afterwards, he parred each of the next five holes prior to adding another birdie on the 17th hole, for a two-under par 70 and the shared second place.
Overall, it was a great performance, considering the fact that only 12 players managed to break the par mark. Moreover, he trails the leader Denis Durnian by just one stroke.
“Maybe last night inspired me to a good round,” the Australian joked. “I made a slow start, but then played really well on the back nine. The eagle at the 11th really got me going – I hit a great drive and then a five wood to about five feet and holed the
putt”.
“That gave me some momentum and I was able to finish off nicely and put myself in a good position for the weekend,” he added. “I always feel good when the weather is nice, and we were lucky to have such a good day today after two days of heavy rain. The
course is always tidy and it’s a fun week. Here’s to a good weekend”.
Last year, Fowler managed to record two victories on the European Seniors Tour – at the ISPS Handa Senior Masters and the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open.
This year, he maintained his form on the tour and registered five top-10 finishes in 11 events that he has played so far.
He came close to his third victory on the tour when he participated in the Berenberg Bank Masters.
However, Tim Thelen was enjoying the best week of his season and thrashed the field with a three-stroke victory. Fowler tied for the second position in the end.
This week, the Australian once again plans to maintain consistency on the weekend, in a bid to register his 13th professional victory.
