New Zealand batsman Peter Fulton has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa due to a knee injury.
Fulton, the 33-year-old http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canterbury-c775 batsman, suffered a tendon injury to his right knee while batting during the ongoing three-day tour match against a South African Invitational XI in Paarl. The knee problem Fulton has picked up is an old one that has recurred throughout his six-year-long cricketing career.
The right-hander, who has not played a Test for the black Caps since December 2009, opened up New Zealand’s innings alongside http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 itinerary.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 cricket team’s physiotherapist Paul Close confirmed on Saturday that Fulton would be heading back to home to undergo an intensive rehab programme.
"We have been monitoring the injury closely and Peter played yesterday in an effort to determine whether the injury would affect his batting. By the end of his innings the pain was significant and it became clear that the injury would prevent him from playing a full range of shots," Close told media reporters today.
"Due to the condensed nature of the tour there is insufficient time to fully recover and he has therefore been withdrawn from the squad. We believe it is best for Peter to return to New Zealand where he can undergo further assessment and continue his rehabilitation," added the Kiwis’ physio.
The New Zealand Cricket selectors have called up uncapped batsman Colin Munro to their squad for the two Tests against the World No. 1 ranked South Africa. The 25-year-old Durban born left-handed batsman, was a member of the New Zealand T20 side that recently lost the three match series against the Proteas 2-1.
This is the second injury blow to the Kiwis after ace pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TG-Southee-c2659 was forced to pull out of the two-Test series due to a thumb injury.
The first Test between New Zealand and South Africa gets underway at Newlands in Cape Town on January 2, 2013.
