Peter Gabriel Magnaye defeats Alfredo Jr. Mailon in the 2011 MVP Sports Foundation Bingo Bonanza
Philippines’ Peter Gabriel Magnaye powered his way into the Men’s Singles quarter-final after defeating Alfredo Jr. Mailon in the third round of the 2011 MVP Sports Foundation Bingo Bonanza event, in Philippines, on Sunday, July 31.
Peter Gabriel proved his superb skills in the game by playing to his full potential in the pre-quarter-final match of the tournament, which is the third leg of the national circuit events. He lost the opening set with a decent margin but clinched the next
two games to make his mark on Mailon.
The start of the opening game was wonderful, where both players tried their best to take a good lead, but neither of them succeeded as no one could create a huge gap. Peter Gabriel was one-point behind his opponent at 10-11 until the interval in the first
set.
Mailon geared up his speed and also played positive badminton to put pressure on his opponent. Peter Gabriel made many mistakes by playing hasty strokes which cost him the opening game with the margin of 18-21, in 16 minutes.
However, Gabriel made an impressive comeback in the second game as he made no mistakes this time and played aggressive and positive badminton. Mailon was helpless as his challenger was not missing any opportunity to score points.
Peter Gabriel continued his domination in the second set by playing at his best. His shot selection and placement was perfect, which helped him in winning the second game. He clinched the set by taking just 13 minutes with a margin of 21-13.
In the final set of this third round contest, Peter Gabriel surprisingly became aggressive and started to hit powerful smashes from both corners of the rear court. He gave no time to his rival to return the bird effectively, by putting maximum speed in his
strokes.
A spirited Peter Gabriel grabbed the final set with a terrific margin of 21-8, by taking only 11 minutes in the court. This Men’s Singles pre-quarter-final contest ended in 40 minutes by the score of 18-21, 21-13 and 21-8.
