Peter George led South Australia to their first victory of 2010-11 Sheffield Shield
Peter George’s remarkable five-wicket haul bagged South Australia their first victory of the season’s Sheffield Shield.
Redbacks set up a 43-run win over http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854 Tigers in the Sheffield Shield clash at Bellerive Oval, after the visitors recovered from being rolled over for just 55 in their first innings.
By the time the Tigers resumed the game on the final day at 144 for 5, they were just 77 runs behind with the fluent skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Bailey-c1480, still at the crease on 77. At that stage, it was presumed that the home side would seal an
easy win but http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Australia-c844 got close to victory when Rob Cassell dismissed Bailey without allowing him to add a single score to his overnight 77.
A fine delivery from Cassel trapped Bailey leg before as the ball kissed his pads.
After Bailey’s departure, the leading wicket taker of the match, Peter George scythed through the lower order of the Tigers, picking up all of the remaining four wickets to complete his five-for.
From the lower order, only http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Luke-Butterworth-c1850 and Jason Krejza managed to get past single digit scores before the whole team was bowled out just 43 runs behind the winning line. Butterworth compiled 20 runs while Krejza scored 14.
Krejza was the final wicket of the match after being caught at slip by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Daniel-Christian-c1308 off George. The home side could add only 33 runs to their overnight score of 144 at the cost of 5 wickets.
George returned with outstanding innings figures of 5 for 28, and overall nine wickets for the match. The successful bowling against the Tigers was a continuation of George’s love affair with Hobart’s Bellerive Oval.
Last year George had claimed 11 wickets in a Sheffield Shield match at the same venue. George’s five-wicket haul was well complimented by Cassell, who finished with 4 for 58 in the second innings in the field.
Earlier, the Redbacks, after being bowled out for a below par 55 in their first innings, were steered by Aiden Blizzard’s magnificent 115 followed by Daniel Christian’s whirlwind 69-ball 93 to amass a daunting second innings total
of 416.
