Peter Gojowczyk defeats John Millman in the quarter-finals – Shanghai Challenger 2012
Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk succeeded in beating the world number 322, John Millman of Australia, in three sets 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-2 in the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Challenger in China on Friday.
The German player required one hour and 50 minutes to claim victory in a close contest.
Gojowczyk and his Australian rival began by holding their serve in the first five games to take the score to 3-2 in favour of the former. The German struck in the sixth and eighth to close it 6-2.
Ranked 251st in the world, Gojowczyk smacked one ace and did not make any double fault, keeping his first serve percentage at 60. The German converted 10 of the 12 first and six of the eight second deliveries into points.
On the other hand, Millman hit two aces and 68 percent of the first serves but he managed to win just eight of the 15 points on them. The Australian player failed to create any break chance and could not put away two of the three he came across in the opener.
Gojowczyk and Millman exchanged a break of serve in the first four games of the second set to square off the score at 2-2. The German contestant hit a blow to Millman in the sixth and held his following serve to take a 5-2 lead.
The Australian player bounced back in style, as he captured three straight games to level it at 5-5. The subsequent two went with serve, taking the score to 6-6 and forcing a tie-breaker. Millman clinched a late mini-break to grab it 7-6(4).
The Australian player banged in three aces but also committed a couple of double faults in the second set. The 6ft tall converted 17 of the 24 first and nine of the 16 second serve points.
Gojowczyk broke the Australian in the very first game of the decider and consolidated on it to move ahead 2-0. The German contender struck for the second time in the seventh and made the most of his double advantage to win 6-2.
The 23-yer-old banged in a single ace and the same number of double fault, having a low first serve percentage of 48 and pocketing nine of the 10 points on them. The Munich, Germany resident claimed eight of the 11 points on them
in the final set.
Gojowczyk is slated to meet USA’s Michael Yani for a place in the title match.
