Peter Gojowczyk flashes past Thiemo de Bakker to book a main draw spot – Australian Open 2012
Peter Gojowczyk of Germany slew a former world number 40, Thiemo de Bakker, with double breadsticks in the third round of the qualifying completion at the Australian Open 2012, first Grand Slam event of the season which takes place at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia. He barely sweated to register a 6-1, 6-1 victory against the 23-year-old Dutch to advance into the main draw on Saturday.
Coming off from the final eight at the Salzburg Challenger, Gojowczyk maintained his winning record against the Dutch, ranked 211th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, after dominating throughout the match. He is bidding to go far at this major hard court tournament which holds prize money of $26 million.
After the Dutch held his serve in the opening game, World number 248, Gojowczyk, displayed his true form. He blasted powerful forehands and backhands to go on a six games killing spree, earning a breadstick in half an hour.
The German kept momentum rolling into the following set and pocketed three more games in a row before Bakker could hold on. Gojowczyk stayed into the savage mode and stroke out last three games as well, earning the second breadstick in 26 minutes.
22-year-old manifested a lower first serve share of 56 percent as compared to the Dutch’s 73 percent but clinched an impressive 19 out of 24 points on it. He also clobbered fewer unforced errors, dusted away both breakpoints he faced and converted five out of nine break chances to his advantage. Gojowczyk then put a cherry on the match by firing four ferocious aces.
32nd seed, James Ward, will tag along the German into the main draw. He also earned a straight set victory over a Dutch competitor, Igor Sijsling, in the court number seven at the Melbourne Park. The British lad fired seven aces in the opening set but failed to find any break opportunity. However, he dominated in the tie-breaker and clinched the set with a 7-6(5) score line. Ward carried his winning momentum in the following set and despite losing his serve once; he broke the Dutch’s serve thrice and sealed the deal by winning six games to two..
