Peter Gojowczyk outplays Mischa Zverev to clear the first round – Salzburg Indoors 2011 CH
German qualifier, Peter Gojowczyk, took down his fellow compatriot, Mischa Zverev, in the opening round of the Salzburg Indoors on Tuesday. Gojowczyk took one hour and twenty three minutes of play to wind up the contest in straight sets, 7-6(2), 6-4, marching in to the round of 16 of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
The all-German affair was held on the hard courts of Salzburg, Austria, with the two competitors putting up a decent show of pro tennis to amuse the local crowd. 24-year-old Zverev posed some serious resistance to his fellow countrymen in the early parts of the game but tend to lose his focus later, falling in the second set in the end.
Gojowczyk had to work out hard in the opener, taking the first set in a tie breaker round but cruised through the next one to conclude a convincing victory. He remained aggressive throughout the contest and launched frequent forays to the net, converting juicy volleys into cross-court winners. The German winner was outsmarted by Zverev in some segments of the game but he kept pocketing crucial points on regularity to seal victory for him.
Although Zverev delivered 80 per cent of it on target, firing seven cracking aces and securing 42 out of 64 first serve points, the German remained unlucky in crafting break opportunities in the contest. He registered just one break of serve in the entire matchup, with Gojowczyk nailing two crushing ones to come out as the winner.
Zverev was off to an excellent start in the opening set, breaking the other German in the third game of the match to lead 3-1 early. He failed to sustain his momentum and Gojowczyk quickly back fired at him in the seventh game to drag the first set into a tie breaker round. Zverev crumbled under pressure in the decider and gifted away the first set to Gojowczyk at 6-7(2), to let his opponent in a 1-0 lead.
Only one break point conversion in the seventh game of the second set proved enough for Gojowczyk to conclude a convincing victory at 6-4.
Unseeded Irishman, Conor Niland, will be up next for Gojowczyk in the second round to fight for a place in the quarter-finals of the Salzburg Indoors. Niland was successful against the other unseeded contestant, Ivan Navarro of Spain, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round of the tournament.
