Peter Gojowczyk upsets Martin Klizan in the semi-final – International Tennis Trophy 2011 CH
A shocking result in the semi-final of the International Tennis Trophy, as the third seeded Slovakian, Martin Klizan crashed out of the competition at the hands of the German qualifier, Peter Gojowczyk, on Saturday afternoon.
The contest was staged on the clay courts of Manerbio, Italy, with Gojowczyk registering a emphatic straight sets victory over the third seeded Slovak, settling the final scores at 7-6(5), 6-3, to make it to the final of the ATP
(Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
Klizan hung in the matchup for one hour and forty seven minutes of play before suffering a straight sets defeat to end his voyage at the International Tennis Trophy. The third seed Slovak failed to take down the German opponent
in the game and coughed number unforced errors to let Gojowczyk away with a comprehensive victory.
The German qualifier served with 64 per cent precision, firing five aces and securing 31 out of 41 first serve points in the game to edge past the Slovak competitor, who collected merely 23 out of 41 points to finish on the losing
side in the end. Klizan had his chances in the game but he frittered away most of them carelessly to remain at a disadvantage throughout the contest. The Slovak squandered away five break opportunities in the matchup and converted just three of them, while
suffering four out of 12 break point conversions from Gojowczyk to lose the semi-final clash.
The opener took off with aggression from both opponents but the third seeded Slovak drew the first blood in the fourth game to break is opponent’s serve and raced away to a lead of 4-1 early in the game. Gojowczyk put his momentum
to a rest in the seventh game by breaking Klizan for the first time in the matchup and then held his serve to drive the scores to 6-6, imposing a tie breaker round into play. The decider also went on neck-to-neck before Gojowczyk finally cashed in a mini-break
to close out the first set at 7-6(5), getting one up in the contest.
More intense tennis was witnessed in the following set, with a series of serve breaks from both contestants. Klizan nailed two straight breaks to his opponent’s serve while Gojowczyk registered three break point conversions in
a row to conclude victory at 6-3, getting into the final of the tournament to face Adrian Ungur of Romani for the championship title.
