Peter Hanson pulls in a stunner at the opening day of the Masters to settle for a joint second
Swede Peter Hanson is savouring his joint second at the opening round of the star-studded Masters after he pulled in a solid four-under 68, to settle for the joint second, alongside South African Louis Oosthuizen.
The 34-year-old Hanson is in extraordinary form and played the tricky Augusta National like his home course throughout the 18-hole stretch.
He attributed his early success to his majestic performance in the US Open last year, where he finished for a strong joint seventh.
He said, “I love the US Open”. Hanson did well to manoeuvre his way through the treacherous greens of the Augusta National and pulled in six birdies in all.
He agreed to the fact that he needs to learn more from players like Phil Mickelson, who knows his way around the Augusta National.
He added, "I think that's the kind of golf course that sets up the best for my kind of game.  I need to get a bit more comfortable around the greens here, chipping and maybe learn a little bit from Phil and Ollie and the guys that are really good at that kind of game".
"But I feel I'll slowly get better and better, and hopefully I can feel comfortable out here tomorrow, as well".
Hanson opened up his front nine with a birdie on the first hole. He fell for the first bogey of the day at par-three 4th and yet another at par-three 6th.
From there onwards, Hanson never dropped a shot throughout the day. He carded two consecutive birdies before making the turn and another three birdies on the back before calling it a day.
Hanson is now one stroke off the lead and will be hoping to capitalise on his early gains on Thursday.
The highlight of Hanson’s round came at the 12th, the infamous Amen Corner where he played stunningly to card two-under.
He was the only Swede who played well in the opening round of the 76th Masters and will be hoping to become the first Swede in the history to bag the coveted title.
He is pitched among the raging giants of the sport including Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Tiger Woods and world number one Luke Donald.
