Peter Hanson takes the KLM Open title home
Peter Hanson claimed his fifth European Tour title, as his three-under par round of 67 was enough to overcome the overnight leaders, Pablo Larrazábal, Scott Jamieson, Graeme Storm and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño, at the KLM Open.
The Swede started off his final round campaign one stroke behind the leaders. The front nine of the course saw him play some good shots off the tee. However, he managed to record only one birdie before the turn.
On the back nine, he remained on even par through the 17th hole, thanks to the two birdies on the 12th and 15th hole against two bogeys sandwiched in-between them.
Standing on the 18th tee, he was sharing the top spot with Larrazábal at a 12-under par score. However, a monstrous putt on the 18th green allowed him to sign an eagle, which also confirmed his victory at the Hilversumsche Golf Club.
Hanson was about to withdraw from the event after he heard about his one-year-old son suffering from a respiratory virus on Friday.
However, his wife convinced him to stay and contend in the tournament. The decision paid him off in the end, as he regained his form ahead of the Ryder Cup, where he will represent the European continent.
“It’s always a nice feeling (to win), but especially this week with how things have been with my son being a little bit ill,” said Hanson. “He has managed to get over that and he’s getting better and better, which is the most important thing”.
“I just wanted to go back home and look after the family, but my wife convinced me to stay,” he explained. “They were in good hands; there was nothing I could do and she was telling me that, but when your kids get sick you don’t think straight”.
Richie Ramsay and Larrazábal, in the meantime, shared the second spot on the leaderboard with a 12-under par tournament score.
Larrazábal was disappointed with his overall performance on day four, as he believed that he could have done much better.
He missed several birdie chances and suffered two bogeys, which could have been easily saved for the pars.
