Peter Ingram replaces Jesse Ryder for the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 tour
New Zealand Cricket has called up the opening batsman Peter Ingram to replace Jesse Ryder in the upcoming tri-nation series in Sri Lanka that kicks off from 10th August at Dambulla.
Benefitting from the elbow injury of Ryder - that ruled him out of the Lanka tour - and unavailability of Aaron Redmond, Ingram got the selectors nod in the squad touring Sri Lanka for the tri-series. Alongside New Zealand, the series will also feature http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 and Sri Lanka.
The Coach and the selector of New Zealand cricket team said that few other players were also considered for the vacant place of Jesse Ryder but in the end it was decided that an experienced opening batsman was required so Ingram won the recall. Aaron Redmond was also a promising choice to replace injured Ryder but he was not available as the 30 year old Australian born batsman is busy in his wedding ceremonies overseas.
"Aaron Redmond was in contention but was unavailable due to his wedding overseas and that opened the door for Ingram. Ingram played in our last ODI series against Australia at home and we were looking for top-order cover so he was the natural choice," said the coach.
Ingram will join the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Maharashtra-c811 in three one-day practice matches at Darwin to prepare them for the August series.
The compressed nature of the tri-series and Ryder’s slow speed of rehabilitation did not favour him to make it to the one-day squad. New Zealand’s coach Mark Greatbatch revealed, looking at his recovery speed that the team management had decided to keep Jesse home to continue his fight against the elbow injury and make a comeback to international cricket as soon as possible.
25 years old Jesse Ryder is struggling with his fitness since last summer when he got serious groin problems. His only appearance in international cricket since last summer was the 2010 World T20 championship staged at Caribbean in May. He entered the tournament with a sore elbow and playing five games he managed to score 93 runs only and at last he capitulated to the elbow pain. Ryder missed out the T20 series against Sri Lanka in May as well.
31 years old Ingram - who was dropped from the national side after his below par performance against Australia earlier this year – has been given another chance to prove his mettle against two Asian cricketing giants, India and Sri Lanka. He made his debut international appearance in January against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 where he scored his international best, 69 runs.
With Vettori and McCullum enjoying their paternity leaves at home, Ross http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taylor-c92915 will lead the relatively young New Zealand side during the Sri Lanka tour. The Black Caps coach said that if the New Zealand team, without Vettori and McCullum, won the series it will be a great achievement. He said that the absence of the veteran players like Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum will give the younger players an opportunity to prove their talent at the international level.
"The team is a relatively young side without Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum but it gives other players an opportunity to express their natural talent on the international stage," he said. "We're building towards the first one-day international and are confident we will be ready when it really matters."
New Zealand cricket team will leave for Sri Lanka on 1st August. The opening match of the series will be played between India and New Zealand on 10th of August.
