Peter Laviolette expected to be given extension as head coach by Philadelphia Flyers: NHL Reports
Peter Laviolette, former NHL and U.S international player and current head coach of Philadelphia Flyers would have his current contract ending at the end of the 2012-2013 season, as he had taken this position in the December of 2009.
But it looks like Peter Holmgren, general manager of Flyers would not let it happen and would give an extension to him instead, which is expected to happen within a week.
Sarah Baicker of CNSPhilly.com was talking to Holmgren when he told him that they have worked out on giving him the extension, as he had previously said they are working on it when he was asked about in June.
Sarah Baicker tweeted on twiiter.com/sbaickercns,
“Holmgren expects the https://twitter.com/search/%23Flyers will have worked out an extension with coach Peter Laviolette within a week”.
She also tweeted that,
“Holmgren said at the draft in June the https://twitter.com/search/%23Flyers were working on an extension with Laviolette, whose contract would run out at end of 2012-13”.
Laviolette has had great time with Philadelphia Flyers since he joined them on 4th December 2009, after the previous coach John Stevens was fired because of poor run by the team, as they lost 11 and won just one match of the first 13 matches and
the team which was favourite to win Stanley Cup sat at 11th position.
Former New York Rangers' player took over and immediately turned the things around and made his team to finished 3rd in the Atlantic Division, 7th in the Eastern Conference and out of nowhere, seeded 7th in the Stanley Cup,
reached finals after beating 2nd seed New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens but lost in the finals to Chicago Blackhawks.
Second season was even better as he made Flyers finish first in the Atlantic Division and second in the Eastern Conference with 106 points. And in the third season, his team finished 3rd in the Atlantic Division and 5th in the Eastern
Conference with 103 points.
Under his coaching Philadelphia Flyers have won atleast one match in the playoffs of all three seasons. And in last two seasons they won 47 games each and score more than 100 points which makes his record great.
47-year-old former defenseman has also coached New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes in the past, having won Stanley Cup with Carolina Hurricanes in 2005-2006 season.
