Kjeldsen added, “I haven’t played an official event since Dubai, where I played well”.
Meanwhile Jamie Donaldson is also in contention for the top slot right from the opening round of the event and carded an impressive seven-under, 65 to soar up the leaderboard earlier in the day.
The Welshman is still in search of his maiden European Tour victory after a gruesome 249 starts on the tour.
Donaldson finished for an impressive joint third in Morocco last week and will be hoping to capitalise on the newly gained confidence.
He said, “I played really well last week, and when you throw in a round like that the game does feel better, and the confidence does increase”.
The young Argentinean Tano Goya also broke the headlines in the opening round of the event when he pulled in a whooping seven-under, 65 to stay behind Lawrie for the second place, trailing by one stroke.
He carded four straight birdies on the closing holes of the back nine to rattle the clubhouse on his way back.
He said, “I feel like I’m playing pretty well at the moment. Today was definitely a good step in the right direction, and if I can keep it going for the next three rounds, then I’ll have a chance. But there’s still a long way to go”.
The projected halfway cut is likely to be placed at one-under today after the culmination of second round.
Italian trailblazer Matteo Manassero fell in for a disastrous even-par, 72 on the opening day, playing his home turf for the first time in his professional career.
He carded four birdies and dropped as many shots through the 18-hole stretch and will need some strong putts to survive the cut.
Matteo, however, was not the only sad story of the day.
Defending champion Raphael Jacquelin had probably the worst day of the season so far, when he fell for a four-over, 76 at the tricky Verdura Golf Course.
The Frenchman is likely to miss the cut at the event he won some 12 months ago.
