Peter Lawrie leads after 12 holes: Barclays Scottish Open
The 140th edition of Barclays Scottish Open has kicked off at the Castle Stuart Golf Links Golf Course in England, on Thursday, with most of the top guns of golf participating in the event. Here is a quick look at the leaderboard.
Peter Lawrie is currently leading the day after carding a score of 5-under-par, after 12 holes. The Irishman teed-off from the front and set the course on fire with his solid iron play. The golfer birdied five of the opening six holes and compelled the spectators to serenade the course with the sound of applause.
However, on the back nine, the player failed to earn any point, owing to the strong breeze that picked up speed later in the day. As a result of not handling the situation well, Lawrie dropped a shot at par-4, 15th.
Chris Wood, Edoardo Molinari and Colin Montgomerie share second place on the leaderboard after carding a score of 5-under-par. Wood, who hails from England, chose to tee-off from the front, as the setup was comparatively less severe than the back. Making use of the edge, the player birdied five holes against one bogey and capped the front with a score of four-under-par, 32.
After marching towards the back, the Wood birdied two more holes against a single bogey to pile a score of five-under-par, after 15 holes. Currently, he is waiting for his turn at the 16th tee, which means he has two more holes left to wrap up the day.
Meanwhile, Molinari - who had a woeful start to the season - is finally back to his form. The Italian teed-off from the back, pared first three holes and wrapped the back with three birdies, which stunned the rest of the field, as carding a good number of birdies is almost impossible on those elevated greens.
Using the confidence from the back, Molinari walked towards the front and birdied four of the opening five holes. The feat shot him straight to the top section of the leaderboard.
Molinari is one of the Top 34 players on Official World Golf Rankings and he is one of the finest golfers on the European circuit. However, his experience in past six months has not been quite fascinating. He was seen struggling on the long pars of American courses, he failed to save par on the Desert swings and his best score in his last six starts has been a 69.
Probably the only positive for him is the fact that he is the defending champion and is delivering an impressive game on the link-styled courses, which shows that he is ready to take the charge to the field.
Montgomerie started the day at the back nine. He carded three birdies, one eagle and one bogey after 13 holes. The former Ryder Cup striker is waiting for his turn to tee-off at the fifth hole.
