Peter Luczak battles past Ivo Klec to advance into second round – Poznan Porsche Open 2011 CH
Australian Peter Luczak needed a third set to overpower Slovakia’s Ivo Klec at the Poznan Porsche Open, an ATP Challenger Tour event held on the clay courts in Poznan, Poland. He registered 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5) victory over the 30-year-old
Czech to advance into the second round on Tuesday.
Ranked 243 in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, Luczak displayed solid tennis to overwhelm threat posed by the Slovak, ranked seven places above him, on their first meeting. It took two hours and thirty-seven minutes
for the Aussie to down Klec in troublesome three sets. The final set went to a tough tie-breaker but Luczak prevailed to seal the deal and booked a second round spot.
The Aussie made quick in-roads as he displayed exceptional skills and abilities to cash in both breakpoint chances to his advantage. He smoothly held his entire serves after facing zero breakpoint and got the desiderated break
in the very first game to take the lead. Luczak broke the Slovak’s serve again in the last game to seal the opener by winning six games to three. Regardless of committing more double faults, Luczak clobbered a higher first serve share and registered a superb
81 percent win on it.
Klec changed his strategy in the second set and succeeded as he faced zero breakpoint. He also capitalised on the several unforced errors and four double faults the Aussie committed. The Slovak required a single break of serve
to clinch the equaliser and which was possible in the ninth game. He converted one out of six breakpoint opportunities to his advantage and mustered the set further by registering a spectacular 85 percent win on it.
31-year-old continued his dismal ways into the final set as he lost his opening serve in the very first game. However, he roared back in the sixth game to level the scores at 3-3.
Later both stars played their best tennis to hold their remaining serves and dragged the set to a tie-breaker. The Aussie dominated in it and eventually bagged the decider with a 7-6(5) win.
The Melbourne resident will next face fifth seeded French Stephane Robert who required a third set to triumph over German Bjorn Phau in two hours and fourteen minutes.
Robert lost the opening set but halted the German with a breadstick to equalise the set scores on their first meeting. The Frenchman then exchanged two breaks in the final set and broke Phau’s serve again in the eleventh game to
seal the decider with a 7-5 score line.
