Peter Mill decide between Malibu and Sir Beaufort for Comma to the Top
Peter Miller’s trainee, 3-year-old colt, Comma to the Top, has two races to look forward to in the near future, but conditioner Peter Miller is on the fence about where to send his colt. Both races will feature the opening day of the Santa Anita meet on
26 December, 2011.
The Florida bred colt of Bwana Charlie, out of mare Maggie’s Storm by Stormy Atlantic, Comma to the Top is pointed toward the Grade 1, $300,000 Malibu Stakes, run over a distance of seven furlongs over the Santa Anita Park’s dirt course and the race is restricted
for 3-year-old males.
The Malibu Stakes have reeled in quite a large field of 12 runners, including Comma to the Top. On the other hand, the other possibility for Comma to the Top could be the Grade 2, $150,000 Sir Beaufort Stakes, run over a distance of a mile on turf.
The Sir Beaufort Stakes is exclusive for 3-year-olds as well and including Comma to the Top, the race has reeled in 9, 3-year-old males.
“We’re nominated to both races,” Miller said. “I’m going to talk with the owners and see if we can’t come up with a consensus on where we should run. We’ll make a decision on entry day, this Wednesday. We’ll try and see who’s going where and then decide.”
Comma to the Top returned to races on 26 November, 2011, in the Grade 3 Vernon O Underwood Stakes at Hollywood Park at about six furlongs.
Ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, Comma to the Top made his first start on synthetic surface after three consecutive starts on dirt, but he took the change negatively as he wilted in the six furlong sprint and finishes a dismal 9th to winner Pacific
Ocean.
He was coming off a 5 month layoff after his non-threatening an unplaced 19th place finish in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs at about 1 ¼ miles on 7 May, 2011.
However, the colt is exiting a victory in a seven furlong allowance test over at Hollywood Park’s cushion track, covering the distance of seven furlongs in 1 minute and 21.63 seconds.
