Peter Sagan continues his top performance at the Tour of Flanders 2012
Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale finished fifth during the Tour of Flanders 2012 after his tremendous performance at the 256 kilometre race.
The Slovakian rode brilliantly and challenged all the main contenders during the 97th edition of the Belgian race.
He claimed the fifth spot at the race and finished almost 40 seconds behind the race leader.
Tom Boonen of Team Omega Pharma-Quickstep grabbed the top podium spot with the quickest time of 6 hours, 4 minutes and 33 seconds.
Filippo Pozzato, Alessandro Ballan and Greg Van Avermaet occupied the second, the third and the fourth positions in the respective order.
Sagan is enjoying a terrific form and has already filled his cupboard with a number of victories in the young season.
The 22-year-old picked his first victory during the second stage of the Tour of Oman and also succeeded at the point’s classifications of the race.
He also grabbed stages at the Tirreno-Adriatico, Three Days of De Panne and finished 2nd at the Gent-Wevelgem and 4th at the Milan-San Remo 2012.
The cyclist made his professional debut with Team Liquigas-Domio in 2010 and made his intentions clear with his numerous performances early on the career.
While commenting on his performance at the Tour of Flanders Sagan told Cyclingnews, "The problem was that I got caught behind the crash on the Paterberg so I had to make a huge effort there to get back on”.
“Then on the Kwaremont the third time, it wasn't that I didn't have any legs left, but I wasn't able to stay with Pozzato and Boonen at that point", he concluded.
"We were going along regularly and then on the Paterberg, I said to myself that I'd tried to force it a bit and see if I could get a small group with me”.
Sagan is now holding the fourth overall spot at the UCI World Tour rankings as of April 1st, 2012.
He has a total number of 179 UCI points in his back pocket as the season enters its second quarter.
Tom Boonen of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step is leading the category with Simon Gerrans of Team GreenEdge and Vincenzo Nibali of Team Liquigas-Cannondale at the second and the third positions.
