Peter Sagan eyeing the 2012 UCI Road World Championships
Despite a terrific 2012 season, Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale has diverted his focus towards the UCI Road World Championships scheduled in Valkenburg on September 23rd.
The 22-year-old has been out of action since a long time and was last seen at the GP Ouest France-Plouay which he could not finish.
Peter intends to travel to Canada later where he will try and win the two WorldTour Canadian events, GP Quebec and Gp Montreal to help him fine-tune for the Championships in Holland.
“Races are good for getting your rhythm,” Sagan noted. “I’ll go and do those two races in Canada. They could be good for preparing for the Worlds, we’ll see”.
“My preparation is still a bit off but I have experience of the climb. I’ve done Amstel Gold twice now, so I know the climb. If you’re going well there, that’s where you can make the race”.
Winning the Tour de France 2012 points classifications was amongst his biggest achievements for the current season.
They Slovakian filled his pockets with a total number of 421 UCI points at the French Grand tour and occupied the top spot after the final point’s classifications, which earned him the green jersey.
He won the event pretty convincingly and never really had to fight for the position as the second position holder, Andre Greipel finished 141 points behind.
Matthew Harley Goss of Team Orica GreenEdge achieved the third position with 268 points while the former Green Jersey winner, Mark Cavendish had to settle for the fourth position after he could only secure 220 points.
When asked about his own favourites for the UCI Road World Championships, Sagan picked three names, Philippe Gilbert, Joaquim Rodriguez and Alberto Contador.
“Gilbert has won a stage of the Vuelta and he could be the favourite if he manages to hold that condition,” he said. “From the Vuelta Rodriguez has been impressive too. I don’t know if Contador is doing it or not”.
Peter currently holds the fifth overall position after the UCI World Tour rankings, with a total number of 351 UCI points in his back pocket.
Only time will tell, if the cyclist manages to find the right momentum for the biggest cycling event of the season, the UCI Road World Championships 2012.
